Reviews for The Problem with Purity

Mystress_Kenobi2009.10.20 - 06:22PM52: Forty-Seven: The LeadSigned
Just dropping a review (in the vain hope that by the time I'm done it will be the near future). I'm loving their odd courtship at the Moment, although I do think that their getting together was a little too tidy (although, to be fair I am often prone to bouts of histrionics, so my opinion may be moot). I actually like the fact that Hermione rejected the mousse, it wouldn't be right if she gave in so easily. Is it the future yet? Anyhow, I'll keep wearing a hole through my phone screen refreshing like a mad woman. Hope everything is okay in RL.

Is it the near future yet? :) I hope it was your intention to make us wait and nothing bad happened! I absolutely adore this story! For me, their relationship is reality: I mean, hands up if you have never had any miscommunication in any of your relationships. No hands raised? Thought so. When a relationship is new and you are not sure about the other's feelings you mess up things easily. Very easily. I can't wait to see them making up for it! :) Erm, not a very constructive review I know, but I just wanted to let you know that your tale keeps me on the edge of my seat, quite literally. I lost count how many times I've hit refresh!

I think their behavior is realistic for their characters, and consistent when examined closely. People all have different thresholds of what they consider to be abusive, what they will or will not accept, how they believe others should or should not be treated... Severus is emotionally stunted. Hermione, while precocious, doesn't know how to act in her first relationship any more than any other teenager. No one is given an instruction manual at birth, or at the beginning of a courtship, and even with all the cries of "Communication is key" in the world, it doesn't make it any easier to accomplish when both people are novices in relationships. This is true in life and (I personally feel) holds up in this fiction. Each of their misunderstandings and resolutions may be messy, but that doesn't mean it is abusive; it's just their way of figuring themselves and each other out. It takes many kinds to make the world go 'round. Hermione is alternately sad and happy, angry and confused, and usually unsettled, but she still gets up and does everything she needs to do. She doesn't wallow. And Severus takes baby steps- remember when she exhausted herself and rather than punish her, Severus let her sleep? Patience is a virtue. Silver Birch, I like your story. Keep your chin up. Looking forward to more, as always.

So everybody has an oppinion about why Hermione did what she did and what she should have done and how irrational she's being, but it seems like most people have neglected one important fact: people are irrational. People do stupid things in the heat of moments and then after that heat has passed feel like they have to stick by what they've done. People misunderstand each other and take out their frustrations on the ones they love. People are stupid and crazy, even the smartest and the most sane of us, and most of all: people will forgive each other even when they shouldn't, because people tend to want the things that are the worst for them, and selfishly don't want to give those things up. I think you've got a pretty good grasp on people. I think Hermione's second chance will be at seducing Severus and I think she'll see it as just that: a second chance. And I think that is a very real thing a nineteen year old girl in her first relationship would do. People have talked about this becoming an abusive relationship, well, yeah, sometimes relationships play with that line, so why should we have a problem with reading about that. Not that I agree with those people: there was a time when I thought it might be skirting with abuse, but at that point it wasn't a relationship.... And right now we see something we've never seen before, the one real thing that makes their relationship not abusive: Severus is trying. Sometimes failing, but hey, he is a person and people sometimes fail. People often fail.
Basically what's going on here is that I'm pissed off at people who are dissing my favorite story, just because they can't deal with a little realism. And it's worried me that you won't give the near future update in response. Which would make me totally sad, because I want to know how you'll resolve this. Cause I know you will. Cause you rock.

just want to drop a line to say that i disagree with the statements that some have made on here - that hermione should have just accepted the mousse and moved on. hermione is seriously upset about something, and in a healthy relationship (which, lord knows, seems rather unattainable here, but still) she would confront those feelings and work through them, and let the person with whom she is angry know that she is. to deny ones anger, to "move on" from it as if it is unimportant is seriously unhealthy in a relationship. i would do just as hermione is doing. she isn't hysterical, or acting out in any way. she is simply choosing not to partake of something she feels too angry for at this point in time. by eating the mousse she would essentially be giving severus the message that her anger is unimportant, and will blow over quickly any time it appears. but it isn't. severus needs to understand that she does have barriers, and that some sensitivity is required with her feelings, just as she shows sensitivity for his.

Just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for all the hard work you put into this story week after week. I look forward to each and every new chapter. It will be a real bummer when this one wraps up.
