Reviews for The Problem with Purity

Yay! I like the extra update! If I can put in a request -- I *really* want there to be more Hermione/Snape action here...even if it was just them arguing...this is starting to feel like a Harry/Draco fic with a side of Hermione, haha! I must say I was very happy to see this chapter (and the last) ending without Hermione being somehow startled or attacked in the hallways. Don't get me wrong, it works the first time or two, but the last time it happened I have to confess that I actually groaned out loud. Good job with shaking up the endings to keep it unpredictable! I've got no idea where you're going to go with it next, although I can't wait to see everyone's reactions to the paper...Is Snape there to see it or will someone show him later...? I can't wait for Thursday! ~M

Author's Response: Hermione wants there to be more Hermione/Severus action in here; sometimes, nobody gets what they want. ;) Although the fic will always be a romance at its heart (though you might disagree with me, lol), it's a romance taking place in the middle of a war to a character who's at the centre of the war. It's a romance taking place between two very complicated people. It therefore doesn't happen fast or easily, and it's not the only thing that Hermione's allowed to concentrate on. Attacking Hermione in a corridor is just about the only way to get her alone and have a passing chance at attacking her; she certainly finds it tiresome and was probably thinking a groan about as loudly as you were the last time it happened. ;) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

I'm losing patience with Severus. I really want to see them engage in a conversation that goes a bit deeper than insults, jealousy, and polite detachment. I love the Universe you've crafted, but I would REALLY love it if Severus grew a few more dimensions and became more active! It's also difficult to believe that Hermione can still feel like he is her soul mate once she has gotten to experience so much hatred, vitriol, and disrespect from him. Is this Hermione a bit of a masochist, then? I also tire from seeing how hard this character works to achieve happiness and serenity--to no avail. I really want to see her finding some peace in her inter-human relationships, especially with Severus and Ron. I'm glad to read Hermione decided to give Ron a chance to share her secrets and burdens, and I'm also glad to see that she is ready to end the relationship if it doesn't work. There are many things that bother me about Hermione's characterization, too. I feel like the traits she displays--perfectionism, dogged independence, the need to be the smartest/strongest, eating very little, being attracted to an emotionally unavailable man, managing the lives of her loved-ones--these behaviors and attitudes are the sign of a very unhealthy person. (Granted, some of these behaviors are linked to her Magical gifts--but why did you choose to give her a slow metabolism, and not a fast one, require a lot of eating? Could it be that you admire her inhuman control?) I feel like you are trying to make Hermione the savior of the Magical World, when she's NOT, nor does she have to be. Why does Hermione seem to be the most competent person in the castle? I find this unrealistic--surely there are teachers and other adults who are responsible, intelligent, moral, and actively engaged in the fight against V. Why don't we see more of this angle of the story--like what are Remus and Tonks doing as part of the fight? I don't want to upset you. But I recognize a lot of the values and ways of thinking that are manifest in your characterization of Hermione--and I don't think it bodes well, unless you have intentionally designed her to have these defects. Beneath the creativity and great writing of this story lurks the idea that your Hermione is the martyred hero, the epitome of magical greatness--and instead, I find her to be a rather unwell individual, in need of the support and love of those around her. Hermione behaves like the adult child of an addict. I wonder if you will go into her back story and home life at all, to trace the origins of her traits. It is unfortunate that this version of Hermione is caught up in such a difficult situation and I wish only for the best resolution of her story.

Author's Response: Engaging in actual honest-to-goodness conversation is definitely exactly what Hermione and Severus need to do if they have any hope of resolving the issues that lie between them. Neither of them have had very much experience with relationships, however, and they shared one night that wreaked utter havoc on their lives. They recoiled. They both have reasons for believing that the other person is not interested in them (to put it mildly), and they both have what they therefore see as compelling reasons not to discuss the matter like rational adults; not thinking a happy ending is possible and hurt enough that they don't want to do something that they think will make it worse, they're avoiding one another (at least in any meaningful way). While the more mature attitude would definitely be to try to discuss it anyway, I believe an immaturity in this instance is consistent with their characters; Severus practically makes an art form out of not talking about things that it would be healthier for him to discuss. Hermione's belief that she has found her soul mate is tied up with being a Pure Adult and a unicorn Animagus. Loving Severus is very different from trying to engage in a relationship with him when he behaves like this; falling in love with him to begin with required that she be able to look past overt behaviour and see what lies beneath. I don't think it's realistic to expect that a relationship with Severus is going to be easy or that it's going to occur quickly. Severus is a difficult character, and a relationship with him is equally difficult to achieve and maintain no matter how hard one is working for happiness and serenity. That doesn't mean that it's impossible, but it's still likely that Harry and Draco are going to get together first. Of the traits that you list of Hermione's that bother you, the only ones which aren't canon are her eating very little and being attracted to an emotionally unavailable man. As I said above, falling in love with Severus to begin with involves seeing beneath his prickly exterior--because he's been hateful, vitriolic, and disrespectful at many points through the last six years--and she responds to the vulnerable parts that she sees of him. Currently, she's not seeing a lot of that, and she has correspondingly retreated from him--even if she's still grappling with the Pure/unicorn part of her that is certain of the good part of him. For the other, it's not that she has a slow metabolism, it's that she metabolizes light as a unicorn; she gets a lot of her nourishment that way and therefore doesn't need as much human food. She doesn't have to eat as much as a human, but she has to change into a unicorn periodically and doesn't like to be confined without light. Harry has similar instances of behaviours bleeding over, but we've seen less of it so far because his transformation is much more recent and because we're in Hermione's head all the time. This story remains in Hermione's POV, and thus it predominantly deals with what she and Harry are doing in the war effort. They live in a castle in the middle of Scotland, and so they don't see much of what the external Order members and other adults are doing. For the most part, their teachers are primarily teaching and doing what they can to educate and influence the next generation. Severus continues to train Harry and Hermione. He continues to spy; the information he gets goes to Albus, not Hermione, and all necessary actions are taken accordingly. Albus coordinates the Order and all their efforts; he doesn't consult with Hermione about this, either. Kingsley is in charge of the Aurors and we only get to see glimpses of him at the castle when he is not out and doing the rest of his job. Remus was trying to sway the wild werewolves (at Albus's request, and rather canon of him), and once Hermione's cure becomes possible, he turns himself over to helping that effort because that gets all the werewolves away from Voldemort and it's one of the things that he wants most in the world. Tonks is teaching, assisting with training and patrols, and otherwise helping to protect the school. By the invention of the Pure Adults, I have created a scenario that revolves around Hermione and Harry. The war has always focussed on him, and a ridiculous number of war events, really, concentrate on him in canon. Hermione has always helped in canon, and not only do we get to see that more clearly here because it's her POV, she has even more power to do so now. She has always been smart, always been protective of her friends, and always stood against Voldemort. She is continuing to do so now. Thank you for taking the time to let me know how you feel; I think it's pretty clear that we disagree rather strongly about Hermione, but feel free to e-mail me if you want to discuss any of my response. ^_^

I have spent this week praying for my baby to sleep a lot so that I have time to read this story. It seems I've finally caught up and will now be waiting eagerly every week for the next installment. Thank you so much for writing this. I'd particularly like to comment on your amazing skill at writing dialogue and your ability to balance humour with drama.

Author's Response: Thank you very much; I'm delighted to hear that you enjoy my dialogue and the mixture of humour and drama. Despite the fact that you will only be reading a chapter a week now, I will send "baby sleep" vibes your way, anyway. ;) Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. ^_^

Oh... no Severus in this chapter - I really missed him :) But the story is progressing beutifully. Well done!

Author's Response: Sometimes it's safer for Hermione to spend some time away from Severus. ;) (But she misses him, too--at least when he's not being a prat, anyway.) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Brilliant! I'm not sure what my favourite part of this chapter is, I liked so much of it. The image of Hermione cuddled up to Castina with Fawkes to keep watch was positively heart warming. I also liked the bit where Lupin wanted to go bite SS's head off. I am wondering when HP or DM will twig that Hermione shouldn't be able to cuddle up to a unicorn given her 'romantic interlude' with SS. Is the fact that the castle is sentient to do with Solace? Ace chapter, thanks. :)

Author's Response: I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed so much of this chapter, including Remus's reaction, lol. Harry knows enough about Hermione that he wouldn't question her being able to touch part of her herd; Draco might indeed be more curious. ;) I shan't spoil anything. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Eeeeee! Another chapter!!! I don't know any way to express my love for this story except for the high pitched squeal! Eeeeeeee!!! Love it!

Author's Response: *grins* I'm delighted to be inspiring squeal-age. ;) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

I love this story! lol enough that I read the first 30 chapters all in one go, and it's currently 2:30 in the morning! I can't believe it's only halfway done! And I sincerely hope that by the end Snape won't be the giant prat that he's being now... That was my thought after a few of the chapters... "Snape... is a prat..." Can't wait for more! ~Loves!~

Author's Response: I'm delighted that you're enjoying the fic so much and very flattered that you read it straight through. :D Severus is definitely a *very* giant prat at times. He's had lots of time to practice; you have to be patient with him. ;) Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. ^_^

So I sat here contemplating whether or not I should wait, and read this after thursday, so I could have two chapters to read... or read it now. Obviously, I didn't have enough control. lol. I loved seeing Severus get some of what he had coming to him! He deserves more- I thought there may be more confrontation, but I'm gunna guess that'll come eventually- can't wait! Letting Remus and Tonks in on it... I guess when I sit and think about it, it had to have happened sooner or later... I mean, they do train with them regularly- they'd have to catch on eventually, lol. Once again, an amazing chapter! Thank you for the bonus!! I can't wait for even more chapters! :)

Author's Response: LOL I've always found that once I've started a fic, if I know there's more, I want to go read it right away. (Which is why I generally steer clear of WIPs entirely, actually.) Many people seemed to be very happy with Severus getting smacked around, lol. Confrontation--in the form of actual discussion of some sort--is hard to manage when both people are avoiding it. Hermione and Harry like the notion of no one knowing about their status, but it becomes less and less practical, and there's something to be said for being in control of the dissemination of the information. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^
