Reviews for The Problem with Purity

You know I think I prefer reading this story one chapter at a time, instead of in one go. This way I get to take my time and savour it, instead of rushing through to read as much as possible. I really hope Severus manages to both apologise and thank Hermione in his usual oblique manner, instead of keeping up the ass-hat-attitude he has adopted.

Author's Response: I'm always pleased as punch when someone decides they like the weekly updates. You savour; I edit. It works out for everyone. :D I think Severus has trouble shaking that ass-hat-attitude sometimes, but we always hope that he will. Thanks for taking the time to review again. I hope you and the baby are doing well. ^_^

So... I really like the way you write, as I I've said before. I find it to be well-paced and pleasurably detailed and creative as well... (now for the "but") but, it's really difficult when there's a Severus and Hermione interaction hiatus. I don't think it would be so bad if this were an actual book, in 3-D paper with all the chapters in one place to read through with great speed all at once in the middle of the night... but online, in this format, with one chapter each week, I think that it becomes very difficult to sustain that relationship for the readers. In the story, Severus and Hermione have been on the outs for only a few chapters, but for us, they've been on the outs for over a month. I know this is a problem with WIP stories, and I just wanted to mention that perspective-in-time differential. In some way, maybe you should get brownie points for actually making your readers pine away for the same amount of time that Hermione is fighting with Severus (heaven forbid- please don't do this for the next 3-6 months) but I would like to see even a drunken eye wiggle! Something positive! Anything! (Though a few chapters ago there was an almost light-hearted moment, right, the Pansy conversation? More of those!) :P I also wanted to say, along with my eye-wiggle-plea, that I know you work very hard to make sure all the chapters are top notch and I really appreciate all that work and effort and dedication. Just because I asked for more interaction, please don't think that I don't absolutely adore this story.

Author's Response: LOL I could smell that "but" coming. :D The driving force of this fic for me has always been the SS/HG interaction. It's a romance, in my head, and everything else, all the other plots and details and events, grew around the romance. I'm not sure everyone believes me when I say this. ;) While there are going to be gaps and times without Severus because he *is* difficult and complicated and hurtful sometimes, he's never far from Hermione's thoughts or mine as the author; I probably want him back as badly as you, but I've really tried to make the interaction between them what I believe to be realistic given their characters. I can see how the time perspective makes it particularly difficult for the readers. (It's one of the reasons that I don't read WIPs, along with a perpetual fear of abandonment.) I guess I'm glad to see that you're pining like Hermione is? (But this sounds sadistic.) I will continue to try to intersperse the lighter moments with all the angst, and I hope that you will not give up hope; I appreciate your letting me know that you're still enjoying the story even with the dearth of Hermione/Severus at the moment. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Thanks for getting these chapters up so quickly! I still don't think that Hermione should have told the prat whose name I will not mention (but rhymes with don) about what is going on. If anyone who will spill the beans, its him.

Author's Response: Hee hee hee. There's definitely been some stirrings against Ron as a result of this event, lol. Hermione's both matured and become more powerful since Marietta Edgecombe ended up with "sneak" across her face; he who shall not be named but is not Voldie, lol, could try to spill the beans, but I don't think he'd find himself able. ;) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Wow! Ron can sure be quick with the logic when he fells it necessary, even though his responses are completely off the pitch. I'd love to see some Hermione and Severus (awake) scenes soon; I've been on the edge of my seat for a while. Marvelous work!

Author's Response: Every once in a while, Ron has those flashes. I sort of likened it to a chess move, having all the players/positions announced to him, sorting them out in his head, and working out the requisite move (though it was looking to the past rather than the future). Hermione and Severus *will* be interacting again, but I make no promises about their levels of consciousness. ;) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Well I reread the entire story a few days ago, and I can see now how Severus has drawn has the screwed up conclusions that he has. Anyway--Great chapter, love the story!

Author's Response: I'm glad that you enjoyed the chapter and found the fic worthy of rereading. Working out Severus's motivations is definitely something that I hope my readers will try to do, and it's nice to hear that you've done so. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Mmmm....It isn't often that Hermione makes a tactical error, but in telling Ron I think she has made a rather large one. Especially given that she has given away Harry's secret without his permission, not to mention Snape. Oh dear, those fireworks aren't going to be pretty. Speaking of Snape, we haven't seen him for two chapters and I am VERY curious as to how he behaves around Hermione now. He isn't stupid, he will realise it was her that helped him. He has no reason to be mad about it, but that doesn't ,mean he will be grateful. Thanks for another interesting chapter.

Author's Response: I suppose Hermione could have tried to re-word and not reveal to Ron all the people who knew the secret or at least the order in which the information had been disseminated, but she was doing her best to salvage the relationship, and that meant being pretty fully honest with Ron now. The Severus revelation sort of comes hand-in-hand with hers, intentionally or not, and she trusts that she understands how Harry feels on this matter; there was no way to ask him without defeating her purpose, which was to have Ron blow up at her rather than Harry. She hasn't done it thoughtlessly, though; she's powerful enough to make sure that Ron doesn't take his anger out explicitly on any of the other parties. You will be seeing more of Severus in the future. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

Well. In the last few days, I decided to re-read almost the entirety of this story. I couldn't make it past through the last few disastrous parts though, so I stopped just as Hermione and Severus made it to his bedroom in The Invitation, (just realizing that it was Valentine's Day when they had sex. How...appropriate?). Then I read this chapter. I figured that I remembered the rest of it well enough that I didn't have to go through all of that angst again. (It was wonderful the first time through, I just wasn't in the mood to get all weepy and depressed). I realized though, that if Severus hadn't been so thick-headed, that there were several hints thrown about that could have made things a lot neater. (On a second look-over, I only found one, but I thought I saw more). Severus knows how "stalwart" Hermione is, so he surely could have drawn some conclusions when she agreed to have sex with him. I don't know what's been going through his head, but I'm looking forward to finding out. Also, in today's chapter, I looked away from the screen for a moment, and when I looked back, the words "Pure Adults Score" jumped out at me. I laughed surprisingly hard until I continued reading and realized that it was not actually written in the Prophet. I compliment you on your wonderful weaving of humor and angst. I am also looking forward to how Severus reacts to Hermione's actions today. I'm a little bit worried about Ron, too, but I'm sure Hermione can take care of that.

Author's Response: I'm delighted to hear that you found the fic worthy of re-reading (even if you weren't in the mood for all the angsty bits). Like Hermione, really, Severus has made an assumption about the other person's feelings and is letting that assumption colour pretty much every interaction. Looking at it objectively, there should be all sorts of hints for both of them, but they see what they want (or don't want) to see. The "Pure Adults Score" was impossible to resist, but I couldn't quite bring myself to believe that even the Prophet would actually have it as a headline. ;) I try to bring some lighter moments to combat all that angst, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hermione definitely had a plan with Ron, and she has no intention of letting him hurt the people she cares about; Marietta Edgecombe's "sneak" was many years and a power downgrade ago. ;) Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^

La-di-da, my third chapter in a matter of a few days...I feel like the cat who got the cream! :o) I'm a bit confused as to why Draco and Harry fobbed Viktor off on Hermione like that, unless they were trying to distract her from her situation with Snape or else trying to gain some alone time for themselves... Anyhow, moving along: Ron's character is a sticky situation sometimes. I've noticed that too often Ron is portrayed as either completely suave and "just friends" material or an utterly stupid, Quidditch-obsessed prat with a temper, so I'm glad to see that you've maintained both his shrewdness and hotheadedness. He doesn't deal with surprises well, but he does follow along in his conversation with Hermione in the Room of Requirement. And he usually comes to the right decisions, eventually. So maybe there is hope for him after all. :o) Poor Severus, Voldy can't have been happy with him at all. I'm with Hermione, I definitely don't think I could do what he does so well. Thanks for a lovely update, I shall now have to wait for a full week for the next one... :( Blast it! I've been spoiled this week; I don't know how I manage to wait on usual weeks... :o) ~SK824~

Author's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed the many chapters; sadly, it's going to have to last you as a very fond memory for a while. ;) Harry and Draco have a plan, certainly, for it does not seem to be going very well with Severus…. I'm glad to hear that Ron's working for you; I'm tried to do him justice and recognize his strong points as well as his faults. Voldemort is definitely not a happy camper, and it sucks especially to be Severus as a result; just imagining it is more than enough for me. Thanks for taking the time to review again. ^_^
