Reviews for The Problem with Purity

sharris2009.08.13 - 05:55PM1: The PrologueSigned
Okay, I am submitting a second review for this chapter. I realized that people were probably right that Severus was angry because of the unicorn blood, but I googled it and it says (per HP world, of course) that to "slay" a unicorn brings the drinker a cursed life. Surely Severus doesn't think she killed a unicorn for him?? I can see Poppy and Albus considering that they don't know she hangs out with them, but Severus did and surely he can put two and two together? Of course, he hasn't been able to yet in this story, so why should he start now.

I really liked the description of using the Dark Mark for tracking Severus, and for severing the Dark Mark's connection to Lucius and Severus - very imaginative magic. Leave it to Severus to put the worst possible connotation on saving his life. I, too, am conflicted about what I want to happen - this version of Severus is very close to canon, but not one that I would wish on my worst enemy. Unless he has a lobotomy and personality transplant, I don't see him as relationship material.

And I was feeling sorry for Hermione until the few paragraphs near the end that list who is angry with her and why. I changed my mind - I think Hermione needs to face some consequences. It does seem that, because she is intellectually and magically powerful, she has taken to doing what she thinks is right, regardless of what others think. That is how Dumbledore got to be so obnoxious. In the beginning of the chapter, she acknowledges she is just like Harry, rushing off to save Sirius - ignoring the fact that that was really poor decision making on Harry's part. Hermione has endangered herself (and the chance of defeating Voldemort), endangered the Order, forced Tonks to compromise Order secrets and security, used Ron, and then is hurt that those involved are angry? She doesn't seem to have a lot of emotional intelligence, or understanding of how others might be affected by her actions, so I do think it is time she faced the consequences of her high-handed actions .

And I am eagerly awaiting next week's chapter! It is because you are a good writer and this is a compelling story that I am so frustrated with Hermione and Severus!

First of all, thank you, thank you for keeping the updates coming despite all the RL pains. So, is Severus angry because she put herself in danger to save him? Angry because she gave him unicorn blood? Or angry for severing his connection to Voldemort? He tends to find reasons to be angry with her. I do wonder if the unicorn blood had more effects that she realizes. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Exciting chapter!

Sweet Jesus! This was utterly incredible; there really aren't the proper words to describe the emotional roller coaster that is this chapter. I have to somewhat agree with an earlier reviewer that Snape's behaviour is getting to a point where it seems almost irredeemable. Hermione has given him more chances than he rightly deserves, and she's rationalized his behaviour in the past, seeming to chock it up to the fact that no matter how poorly he treats her, she's irrevocably attached to him, so there's no point in trying to forget him. In a way, it's a bit disturbing how much she's forgiven him his past actions. Before declaring that he ought to kill her, I was hoping that his initial screaming of her name would devolve into one of those, 'I can't believe you put yourself in that much danger, don't you know how much you mean to me?' However, it clearly didn't. Sad really that for all the intelligence and power these two posses, they can't seem to have an honest, frank discussion. I can't wait for the next chapter on Thursday! I'm glad things are looking a bit more up for you in your personal life; sending positive thoughts your way that things will continue to improve.

When I got to the part where Severus says he should just kill Hermione, I was shocked. I couldn't figure out why he was so livid. But reading the other reviews, I realize it must be the unicorn blood thing. Poor Hermione! I hope she doesn't run off only to get herself caught and in trouble, though I fear that may be the outcome of her flight. Hopefully Severus gets his head screwed on straight soon. Or perhaps Castina wil talk to him? I love your story and I'll try to refrain from freaking out between now and next Thursday. Good luck with everything.

I am extremely conflicted about what I want to happen in this story. At the beginning, S/H were supposed to get through the problems and be together. Now, I no longer want that to happen. I do like your characterization of Severus and the early portion of the thorny relationship with Hermoine, but I think you might have taken Severus beyond the point of any “romantic” redemption. I love him and hate him at the same time. Unless you plan to write another 40-50 chapters, I don’t see how you will be able to bring him anywhere close to being an acceptable mate (if that is even your intention). A too simple character change will ruin everything you have accomplished. Severus has devolved into physical abuse (disguised as training), mental abuse (no surprise) and public humiliation. Hermoine has been much more accepting of this than she should have been and rationalized away a portion of his behavior. Even smart girls get in/stay in abusive relationships. There has been nothing done to put the brakes on his behavior and it continues to get worse. I don’t see how her friends could stand by anymore and they should be dialing the domestic abuse hotline. If S/H get together again, how could her friends look at Severus and not wonder if he is physically hurting her in some way (he is now tainted). Anyway, excellent chapter, fab story overall and I will continue to read.

I love this chapter!!!! I found myself in tears at the end, with Hermione's overwhelming hurt. What in the world is Severus thinking? He's got it screwed up somehow, but I haven't a clue. At first I thought he was feeling used, but it has to be more than that, doesn't it?

WTF? Hermione risks EVERYTHING to save him and he wants to KILL her? I mean, Really! I can see why she finally snapped. My only wonder is why it took so long. He has been such a brute towards her throughout this fic... As far as everyone else--she should just tell them to go jump in the lake (and consort with the giant squid!!!). Wonderful tension and angst--it's killing me!
