Reviews for The Problem with Purity

I really, really, really want to know what's going through Severus' mind while Hermione was eating the Mousse. It had to have been, at the very least, naughty :D

Author's Response: LOL. Yes, yes it was. But he will deny it if you ask ^_^

You write well and have an interesting premise for your plot. However, I have a problem with your rendering of Hermione; the way you write her, she really seems to be a Mary Sue extraordinaire. She can do virtually any spell in existence, and invents her own; she can brew any potion, has read every book ever written; she can't even be an ordinary Animagus, she gets to be a unicorn, the most wonderful beast there is (unless you are saving a Phoenix Animagus for Harry). I find this over-perfect Hermione hard to like or identify with.

Author's Response: Let me start by thanking you for taking the time to let me know how you feel. I suspect that this is going to be a time where we have to agree to disagree, but here goes my explanation as to why my Hermione is the way that she is. The reviews indicate that you're not the only one who feels that Hermione (and Harry) are too perfect. However, what you've remarked upon specifically in your review are, to my mind, aspects that are quintessentially Hermione: things that I can't change. The Hermione that I've envisioned here is one who's grown from the first-year who got through Severus's "potion logic" test to get to the Philosopher's Stone. She's the Hermione who brewed Polyjuice in second year, the one who, at sixteen, used the N.E.W.T.-level Protean Charm as a matter of course and cursed Marietta Edgecombe such that her face hasn't been cured even months later. Being willing to read every book, brew any potion, learn any spell is *exactly* what Hermione is determined to do. She's been called the brightest witch of her age, and I've taken it to be sincerely meant. So when she turns that intelligence to something like protecting her and Harry or curing lycanthropy, she has the brains and the power and the tenacity to pull it off; she's older now, and both more mature and more powerful. She's had a year of being a Pure Adult (even if she didn't know that's what it was called) that has her at an advantage over Harry, including coaching from Fawkes and Castina; you might just find that annoying, but it's the sort of thing that I find happens in canon, assistance from unexpected sources that get our heroes ready as necessary. Like Harry who can cast a Patronus at thirteen, she has learnt to Mask herself like Albus can, just a lot earlier than most wizards tend to learn it. It's part of the legacy of being a Pure Adult. Vinca Black suggests that she's *too* mature for her age, and that may be a fair point. I've always seen her as rather mature for her age in canon, and giving her the status of Pure Adult has made her and Harry mature even more in my fic. I think a lot of SS/HG writers who are writing a 7th-year fic make Hermione very mature in order for it to make sense that she and Severus have a realistic chance at a relationship. The things that she's had to do so far in my fic are exactly the sort of thing that Hermione excels at: there's a problem, so she researches and comes up with a solution. She has faith in her ability to research, and when she comes to Harry with a notion, it's because she believes it will work. The fact that she's a unicorn Animagus is an integral part of being a Pure Adult. She and Harry *are* singled out as Pure and special, and Harry's Anigmagus form is going to be magical as well. It's sort of impractical for them, in terms of being able to use it in front of others, but it's part of who they are, something that sets them apart. There *are* things that Hermione is uncertain about, but mostly we haven't strayed too far into those areas yet. Currently, she's faced with a specific problem (protect herself and Harry) from a specific threat (being found out as Pure Adults and taken advantage of); she formulates a plan and goes ahead with it carefully and comprehensively because there's a lot at stake. I can't make you like my Hermione if you don't, obviously, and I would be saddened to lose you and other readers who feel the same way, but I stand by my characters. They're obviously not perfectly constructed, and it may come down to your not thinking I do a very *good* job of making them Pure Adults, but setting them apart as powerful, clever, and mature was deliberate on my part. There are things they can do that no one else can. I hope that you will be willing to continue to give the fic a chance, but I understand if you decide that this is not your sort of Hermione. Thanks again for taking the time to review ^_^

Yet another brilliant chapter. I just love the depth you are able to go into with out making this tedious. It has totally grabbed my attention and makes me want to read more...more...more! Thursday are way to far apart!

Author's Response: Thanks for taking the time to let me know that it worked for you and that you're anxious for updates. I'll try to supplement with more bonus chapters from time to time ^_^

I really, really, really love this story! The plot is brilliant, I do love a scheeming Hermione, you have a Harry I can believe in, one who actually shows the brains he need to defeat Voldiebutt instead for throwing tantrums. I also love the interaction you have between Hermione and Severus, slowly building a relationship between two equals. The details you have written into this story makes it that much more special, you make the story come "alive" . Icing on the cake is the manipulation fo Screemingor and the aknowlegdement that while Dumbledore is on the rigth side, he is a master manipulator who uses people as he see fit "for the greater good". All in all, a wonderful story I know I will love to follow to the end:-))

Author's Response: Thank you very much for letting me know. I really feel that by seventh year, Harry should have his act together, and I think putting him and Hermione in cahoots makes for lots of fun possibilities. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the SS/HG (their equality is very important to me) and all the details ^_^

I love reading your long, detailed narratives. It really brings your story to life. And a great story it's been thus far, I tell ya! As always, I dread it when you say "next chapter up on Thursday." I'm afraid that's way too long madam! But it's such a good surprise when I see it a little earlier than expected. It just makes me so giddy to read another installment. So please, keep them coming :)

Author's Response: Thank you very much for letting me know. The next chapter *she says with something that might be an annoyingly Albus-like twinkle in her eyes* will be posted on Thursday ^_^

Another lovely chapter :) I do like how Hermione interacts w/both Severus & Harry

Author's Response: Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Those two are definitely the most important guys in her life right now ^_^

I think Jk Rowling should have hired you to help her write Harry Potter books. I love your details, characterization and everything. I am much more absorbed in this world now and it seems more logical :)))

Author's Response: LOL Thank you very much :D . I've struggled to make this fic as coherent as possible, and I have the charts, spreadsheets, calendars, and copious notes to back that up ^_^

Hurry hurry hurry with next chapter, I'm really engrossed. I haven't read a fic so well rounded in ages.

Author's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review; I'm glad you're finding the fic comprehensive ^_^ . The next chapter is in the queue, so hopefully you won't have too long to wait.
