Reviews for And They Didn't Live Happily Ever After

orionlee2016.01.01 - 10:04PM1: "The Pub"Signed
I really enjoy the premise of this story, having read the first few chapters. I do hope you will continue to publish the complete story! (I understand the remaining chapters are there but yet to be beta-ed). In particular, I am drawn to the moral ambiguity / dilemma of the two triangles - Ginny/Draco/Harry and Hermione/Severus/Ron. I am looking forward to seeing the development of these characters and their relationship. What's more, I feel that having Lavender as a wildcard on the plot is also very intriguing: How will her agenda impact the remaining characters? Having said that, I am a bit concerned whether the complexity of the relationship and the various plots might make the story difficult to follow. All in all, I am looking forward to reading such a unique story. Thanks!

Author's Response: Think of my story more like a serialized TV show like Vampire Diaries or Babylon Five (Certainly not as complex, broad or expansive as Game of Thrones, I promise you). There is a core group of character, there will be the addition some more original characters during the second half of the "series." And themes and items that pop up may pop up again later in the story, bring to full circle some of these earlier plot threads. And like many TV shows that have an opening sequence of "earlier on Paranormal Romance Drama..." to remind viewers of previous scenes, I do have character or exposition remind the reader of how some character or item fit into the story earlier to remind them. It's a way to keep the reader on track without going, "Huh? What chapter was that in? Where does that seem familiar?" So it might seem a bit repetitive to some, it is a reminder for others who may have read that item/spell/incident weeks/months before and forget its significance.

I Love that you had Severus' reflection exit in a snit like a wizarding portrait. I've always imagined the enchanted mirrors with a sourceless voice (nonsensical, I know). But having the person's reflection take on the personality of the mirror is so much better. It makes for a more vivid read. :)

Author's Response: Thanks. I try and remember the little things that add the extra special little something.

I am so grateful you are going to complete this fic. I had written it off as one of the not only good but original ones that i wouldn't find out how it ended. This side foray into the world of the Roma was a pleasant surprise. i appreciate the fact that you treated them respectfully without having to over-romanticise the culture to the point of disbelief. Very well done. i can't wait for what I hope will be a HEA for Severus and Hermione, a vindication for Kingsley for his loyalty and insistence on doing the right thing even when it's difficult, and what I hope will be the ultimate Karmic bitch - slap of Moody for his narrow-mindedness and relish of inflicting harm and humiliation on my beloved Severus. Not as vital but certainly would be appreciated would be the comeuppance of Molly for her interfering without thought to the harm she could cause with her meddling. As annoying as Ron is, I don't necessarily want to see him punished, I just want him out of Hermione's life. He can run, walk, or be carried away in a big pine box. I don't really care how, as long as he goes. I always feel sorry for Harry in these situations. I know he will have to be hurt if there is going to be a happy ending for Draco and Ginny, but please be as gentle with him as you can. A bit of hope on the horizon for him won't go amiss.

Author's Response: Well, technically, this fic is complete. Only thing we're waiting for is my wonderful betas to take time out of their busy lives to fix my errors. I wanted to be respectful of the Roma culture, since it tends to be portrayed in either the romanticized version with the slutty Gypsy girl or as a bunch of dirty thieves. And excellent book into the Roma culture is "Bury Me Standing." One Native American reviewer found my chapter with Harry's birthday party offensive because of the casual treatment of the cowboys and Indian theme - since that is as much as Harry was exposed to growing up watching the TV to Native American culture. I meant no disrespect to Native American culture (my husband's best friend is half-Navajo), but it was a child's theme party, to make up for the fact that Harry didn't have these themed parties growing up. And British wizarding society would be about as knowledgeable about Native American culture as us Muggles would be about wizarding culture, but the reviewer didn't interpret it that way, unfortunately.

As for how things will fare for Kingsley, Moody, Molly and Harry, those will all be resolved. Some in satisfactory fashion, some in not so, since life isn't always fair. I wish I could tell you more, but that would be spoilers.

I found your Harry's rationale concerning gifts and spending equated with love made a lot of sense. I see a similar consequence of upbringing in my own husband's attitudes. I do hate the adultery side, but the cold feet and second guessing are spot on like you've lived this what-was-I-thinking phase of marriage whether first hand or vicariously through unhappy friends crying on your shoulder. I've been married 24 years now, and many of them were spent in regret, but even though dh is still a practicing alcoholic, I've learned how to take charge of my own attitude and find joy in my marriage. And thanks to a remark by my psychology professor, I realize that if my husband doesn't have a clue in the marriage bed, it's because I haven't given him one (for a long time, I didn't have one to give, and being resentful and bitter and emotionally unavailable didn't help). The professor said something to the effect of, you train your spouse to be your perfect lover, it takes years. and yet, I still want to see ss/hg hea in my fanfics, this one included (sorry Ron) now that I've shared far more personal stuff than is probably appropriate, I'll acknowledge that my experience with sticking it out through the rocky years won't be everyone's, and I'm not judging people who make different choices. thanks for sharing your time and talent. You're crafting and excellent tale.

Author's Response: A lot of the relationship dynamics I wrote based on people I know who married for the wrong reasons, and also postulating "Gee, if I married that one guy I dated who treated me poorly, what would it be like" and also "what if I settled and married without being truly in love"? Thanks for the compliment on my writing and sharing your story.

What an awkward (and funny) situation for Hermione to get a reading of her palms by the wise Roma leader. It's quite encouring to hear that she'll be divorced in the not so far away future. And it's even more encouraging to hear that she'll get a second chance to be with Severus, even if she won't leave with him at first. As it's Hermione's mother going into the hospital my guess is that the other one will be her aunt, or perhaps the unborn one...

Author's Response: Yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for Hermione and her marriage of convenience. We'll find out eventually how the fortune comes to pass.

Gremlins in the cars, lol. I enjoyed your visit for Hermione to the Roma camp.

Author's Response: Gremlins, yeah. I had been dying to find a chance to put them in a story someway, and this fic provided a great chance to write them in and also include the Roma community,

I'm really glad that the kneazle is out and about! Poor Hermione. Luckily she has Severus to lean on and to tream about. I don't like Ron's attitude at all, but I also pity him a little bit - Molly is so very overpowering as a mother. Anyway, I'm sorry that I don't review more often, I'm really enjoying your tale. But with my new job I only have the time to read... Looking forward to the next chap.

Author's Response: I'm glad you have enough time with your job to read my fic. Yes, Molly is a domineering mother figure. Next chapter has been submitted to queue already today, so should pop up in about a few days or so.

The sooner Hermione and Ron split up, the happier they will be. There's no point beating a dead horse.

Author's Response: Oh, the one spoiler I will give is that they will split. The question is when. Chapter 58 will give a blg clue to that.
