Moribus2011.03.17 - 02:41AM8: Seven: No Life I Own, No LibertySigned
I'm stunned that Severus allowed so much insubordination from Harry and Ron as he was being dragged back to the castle by Hermione. As for the scene where Severus opened up to Hermione: I have a hard time imagining it because I didn't see it happening (the reader didn't get to listen to most of the words) and there's nothing in my personal experience to allow me to relate. Simply put, I couldn't have done what Severus did, so I don't understand how he did it. I, for example, may have the ability to narrate a story of my own past, but it would be a very sterile, factual retelling, bereft of any depth of emotion. I'm not sure why or how Severus would be able to make an emotionally resonant retelling of his own past. Or maybe I'm just more broken than he is. :) I would have benefited from a *LOT* more dialogue in that scene. As for Dumbledore, I enjoyed the "I know she's there and I'm not calling you on it." It seems Dumbledore would take delight in taunting people with knowledge they wish he didn't have.

Author's Response: It is what it is...I didn't recount it because it is what we know about Severus... I've told most of it throughout the story, and what I haven't told is common knowledge...I don't like stories that repeat big swathes of canon... he did it because she demanded he do it, and at that point he felt so compromised by his own inadequacies he was compelled to obey... we are compelled to obey our masters because we love them...more importantly, we trust them, and trust is a little thin on the ground in Severus' world right now...

Ooooohhhhh faking a pregnancy??? Wouldn't Voldemort be able to detect a magical charm over Hermione? What if he performs a charm and it is negative? But then of course those two are very clever and would outsmart that sick reptile. I wonder if they will "fake" a miscarriage of some type and use it as further excuse to hate against Harry or Dumbledore, thus sealing their places at the Dark Lord's side even more, at least in his mind. That would be a cool plot twist. Or she could really be pregnant and they just don't know it yet *grins*. Or, or or gee can I write the story? J/K I wonder if Voldemort will hold Hermione at some point as insurance for Severus to do something he wants him to do. Or allow other Death Eaters to "share" her. Oh gods, this could get hairy!!! *biting nails*

Author's Response: Ahh, but my dear, I will never take you anywhere you don't want to go... you must trust me...

Mmm, Hermione-flavored cherry... Goes to show that even when Severus' upbringing is showing, he's still as witty as ever. Now, if Hermione takes anything Severus said to Sirius at face-value, she's going to have some explaining to do. Because really, what's the harm in winding up your arch-enemy? As for the vow... Yep, Hermione owes me an explanation, there. The implications of her vow are quite intriguing, but of all the things she could have sworn, why that? And hasn't Severus just unnecessarily made his job many times more difficult? I'm confuzzled.

Author's Response: Just trying to write a story that makes everyone crazy... hee hee

Such a shame that Hermione can stand up to Dumbledore and not to Ron and Harry! I know, I know, it's hard for her to stand up to someone who doesn't mean to step on her. Still, there's got to be *some* way to keep that girl in the castle! As for Dumbledore, being blinded by the greater good is one thing, but when he's deliberately antagonizing those who are the most willing to sacrifice for the cause (as in the cannon example of insulting Snape with the eggs in the basket comment)... How long do we have to go before the man ends up on the wrong end of an Avada? If Severus still does end up killing him in this AU, is he going to get a break from guilt and responsibility long enough to admit that the death of Dumbledore is a bit of a relief?

Author's Response: It would seem so...

I *hate* it when a character refuses to do as they're told by someone like Severus. Never mind the fact that such is clearly in-character for Hermione. She seriously needs to grow out of that. Severus is so strong, resisting a curse that was amplifying his own passions. Yet he thinks he's so fragile. Of course, it's a bit of one, a bit of the other. The best line: "Sometimes, I think I may be going mad." Insanity + Severus = fascinating!

Author's Response: He is wonderful when he's conflicted. He's pretty sweet when he's content, too...

How confusing for Severus, learning that Hermione has a bit of ability with acting! Shame he couldn't detect the scent of what he'd done to her. The scene with Draco showed the wit that's usually so absent in fanfic yet so fitting for those two. Nasty or nice, I enjoy a brilliant Draco.

Author's Response: Draco is indeed an untapped resource. Look for more of him in later chapters!

My favorite element of this chapter is how Severus slides seamlessly between insecure, self-hating, and deeply confident about his own skills in seductive manipulation. And yet, said ability in seductive manipulation leads him to question whether he could be in any relationship without destroying the essence of his partner. Gods, is this not the essence of the conflict of the Dominant? In my experience, absolutely -- and if it's not, they're just an abuser in a pretty costume. I've never seen it laid out so openly, though. I both love it and hate it when people manage to put words to things I can't express. And the honesty! I agree with a previous reviewer that Severus is such an honest person. Though I'm surprised that he'd *admit* that he was being honest. Better for a Slytherin to keep people guessing about veracity, even when they're being open, no? And are you threatening some serious D/s here? *great big hopeful puppy dog eyes*

Author's Response: I have always said that the Dominant is the true 'slave' of the relationship. One cannot exist without the other, and you have such incredible responsiblity as a Dom to a submissive not to screw them up. The serious ones can do it. The others...well, they have a different agenda.

Oh, I forgot -- in chapter one, the detail about him scenting her menses... Wow. The man is erotic even when he doesn't know he's being erotic. As for chapter two... Poor Severus. Don't worry, Severus; Hermione will totally understand. Let's just hope that she'll also understand that it's not all a ploy for him. As for the DEs raping Severus, I'm totally on board with that -- only if you promise to bring it into the relationship with Hermione somewhere, if only as a barely-acknowledged discomfort zone. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm pulling for him to overcome said discomfort, with considerable difficulty, and really connect with her in every... possible... way.

Author's Response: Well, things have a way of working out in my universe. I am of the same opinion of Sempraseverus, my VisualMuse: Do What Thou Will Shall Be The Whole Of The Law...even with Hermione and Severus!
