Reviews for Lay Me Low

mindquaker2011.11.03 - 08:02PM28: Twenty Seven: The Cost of LivingSigned
This is really a wonderful story. That's all I can say. Having read it all in one day, I am desperate to find out what happens next. I have been continually surprised and impressed at the way this reality, with the relationship and marriage, plays in tandem with canonical events. I know you are taking a break, but please know that your return is eagerly awaited!

Author's Response: Thank you very much! That means the world to me. Even though I am working on NaNo, I am thinking about Lay Me Low, and hopefully will have something to post soon. It is getting near the end, and I want to make sure I get it right. Everyone has been so supportive, and I want to make sure I do justice to the end of the story.

I wanted to jump up and cheer aloud for the way Severus told Albus off. That was beautifully written. Thank you.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it!

BTW, I meant to say (& stupidly didn't) that, like other reviewers, I loved the fact that Severus comforted Hermione in her mind whilst she was witnessing horrific events. As someone who has suffered great trauma & witnessed things I wish I hadn't, I can imagine the comfort that would bring. As, for me, Alan Rickman *is* SS I could hear his voice as I read it. I suffer from constant, extreme tinnitus (noises in the head) which are unbearable at the moment & have myself, in the past, written a fic where SS communicates telepathically (I guess that's the correct term!) with the female character. It was my take on wanting to listen to something pleasant - & I often put on headphones of AR reading something (Return of the Native is fantastic!) just to hear him instead of the foul 'white noise' I have been forced to listen to for the past nearly 30 years - he has such a beautiful, soothing voice :-)

Author's Response: I am so sorry you have to suffer from such a frustrating condition. Occasionally I have white noise in my right ear, and while I can generally ignore it, I cannot imagine having to live with a more extreme version of it. I had hoped this chapter would convey that feeling of protection, and the growing reliance they both have on one another and their ability to draw near to one another this way. I adore AR's voice; always have done. I don't have any audio books that he's done, but I'll have to find some soon - he really does have the silkiest voice in the world. I always hear him when I write Severus - I am an unashamed voice slut.

I keep dipping in & out of this story & have just been catching up again. What makes me return is not just the quality of your writing (there honestly isn't anyone out there in ff who can touch you at the moment), but it's the power of what you write. Without wishing to reiterate what your previous reviewer, Jong_Kahn, has said (as she's put it so eloquently), you wrote the connection between the two so powerfully that it was almost tangible. It is like a healing balm for the reader to read such emotional perfection. This really is a story in a different league & I would give you more than the allocated 10 points if I could (truely!) :-)

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your feedback. I truly wanted to write a 'Severus and Hermione against the world' fic, and portray them as not the angst for one another, but as the refuge for one another, and I'm so glad that readers are enjoying that dynamic.

Phew. What a wild ride THAT was, and it's nowhere near over. It's emotionally exhausting to read it, knowing as we do how much they both have to overcome in order to help Harry and the Order persevere. The emotional basis for their mutual grabbing once away from the Dark Lord rang true; you made sure not to leave out the shame felt amongst all the other emotions trying to crawl out of their skins. Sometimes overwhelming negative emotions make you reach for the one thing that connects you to another person, just to feel something positive, just to feel connected, just to relieve the horrid tension, just to still feel human, feel all right...or as right as it's possible to feel, right then. That was very well done, as was the chapter. Whew! I feel better now, having expressed some of the feelings that chapter stirred up. Thank you for having written it, and written it so well. Good luck on your November writing; we'll be waiting for you upon your return.

Author's Response: Thank you so much. This was exactly the feeling I was hoping readers would take away from this chapter. That desperate need to connect with the one thing that is decent in their lives, to try to wash away the horror they'd just lived through. I'm thrilled it gave you that feeling of tension. I am so pleased that you felt this way about this chapter. I am working on NaNo, but I am also thinking about the next chapter, so hopefully it won't be too far into December before an update.

I love how Severus was in Hermione's mind, comforting and protecting her while at the meeting. The love they have for each other is palpable through your words.

Author's Response: I truly feel that, at the end of this story, that will be all they have left.

First of all, I adore this line, and since it's so early in the chapter, it tends to be overlooked in light of all the heavier-duty stuff that comes after. But I love it, since it's so true, especially thanks to Alan Rickman's perfect portrayal: "For a man known for his harsh, flinty, snarky personality, Severus Snape could croon comfort like no other." Whoo! As to the whole sad tale of Regulus Black, you have done a wonderful job with that. You painted a detailed picture of what he was like, and especially important, showed how it was possible for someone as otherwise level-headed as Snape to be seduced into taking the Dark Mark. Seeing the pain of Regulus' defection and loss in Severus' heart makes it even more painful. What a well-written chapter. Thank you so much.

Author's Response: Thank you, Jong. That is one of my favourite lines in the chapter - thank you for focusing in on it. I, too hear Mr. R's voice - I have always loved it, and was always delighted that he played Severus. He was able to give him that brooding, sexy snarkiness, along with the sadness behind his eyes. This chapter just flew out of my hands, and is one of the few times I sent it to my beta completely sure that I'd hit all the right notes on it, and I'm so glad you found it pleasurable.

Severus feeding Hermione helped to heal them both in ways that nothing else can. Same with sex. And I love it! Severus cleared his throat, and with his beautiful voice, soft as sin, weaving through the night like incense, he related to his wife the tale of Regulus Black... Well, if that isn't a perfect description of his voice, I don't know what is. So beautiful. Severus and Reg's relationship was so strong, and even now affects Severus. Although he seems to have moved on and forgiven himself for somethings, I think he will always hold himself responsible to Reg's death. Hopefully with Hermione's help, he will learn to forgive himself for all his past mistakes.

Author's Response: Thanks, babe, for always making me feel so worthy. I'm pants at expressing my appreciation for how you always find my favourite bits and remind me why I love to write so much.
