Totally did not see that coming, I'm still in shock I think. Earlier in the chapter I was trying to imagine where this story was headed if Snape went on the run as a murderer towing Hermione with him, and I must admit I didn't have very high hopes for the continuation of what has been up to now a truly original and believable take on these characters. But then, oh but then, you had to go and blew my mind with this gem of a cliffie now didn't you? Thanks much, I love it!

Author's Response: Thank you! I really hope I can continue to provide an enjoyable story. This is the toughest fic I've ever written, and I can honestly tell you its feedback like this that keeps me going with it.

Wow! Dumbledore was shockingly vicious and it took me a moment to remember that it was at least as shocking when he taunted Snape in canon! I have just gotten used to it over the past four years, but you have reminded me. It was a fun touch to throw in Gretna Green. :-) And the charmed registrar. I appreciated your clean substitution of Hermione as Snape's guiding force rather than JKR's long-dead Lily-Patronus weirdness, and it's a bigger slap in the face and less subject to Dumbledore co-opting it with sentimentality than "Always." And I don't think I can thank you enough for Snape changing his surname. I can accept, with ill grace, JKR's world in which every single married woman takes her husband's surname, but it was the final cry of pain in the implausibility of the Hermione-Ron match to think that the girl who started S.P.E.W. and the DA would become, quite literally, another Mrs. Weasley. Now THAT was OOC; your story is not.

Author's Response: Thank you - I have always thought it immensely foolish to pair Hermione and Ron - no two people were ever more ill suited. I'm not a Ron-basher, but I do think he's a bit of a spare one. Good at chess, and that's about it. I will say that I once read a fanfic in which Severus changed his name to Granger-Snape, and I thought it fitting - this is a man who wanted nothing more in his youth than to fit in and be part of something. Now he is, and it's the best thing. I will never believe that Severus is a cold, unfeeling man.

Hmm! The Spinner's End vow with Hermione present! I'm amused that you held Dumbledore at wandpoint and forbade him to rewrite the story while you went ahead and did the same. :-) I also forgot to mention how much I loved your description of Hermione's elegance Occlumency in the previous chapter. Yes, take pride, make it pretty! That stuff is important!

Author's Response: Always! I have always thought that Severus' magik would be quite beautiful, since he had so little growing up, he had to create his own. And I would think Hermione would be influenced by that, possibly only on a subliminal level.

Interesting! I thought the deal between Snape and Dumbledore was going to be too staggering for Hermione to deal with, but no, you had her find a way out! I loved Dumbledore's simultaneous hostility and abstract wish that Hermione rather than Harry had been his tool. And an interesting twist to have Hermione be the magic one who shows up and makes everything right, after Snape being so accustomed to doing that for everyone and having no one do that for him.

Author's Response: I wanted to establish a partnership very early on, because they are going to go through some very harsh trials soon, which they could not survive alone...

I've read this chapter several times, and I have tried to think of something clever to say, but I'm still astounded by the outcome. I'm just blown away by the sight of Hermione casting Avada Kedavra at Dumbledore. In your reply to my comments to the last chapter, I wondered what you meant... but I never allowed myself to seriously believe that Hermione would be the one to kill Albus. All I can say now is WELL DONE! When they pledged to have each other's backs, it is clear that they both meant every word of it. And now Severus cannot deny that she must go with him when he leaves the castle. Teddy, I'm worn slap out. This chapter is "intense" personified. A Thousand Points to Your House! Beth

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Beth! I was laughing at your comments in the last chapter, and I told the Hubs, "Should I say anything? Nah, I'll let Beth find out herself just how good her instincts were!" I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter - I have to say, I was pleased with it, and I've been blown away by the feedback on it.

Oh my... Just when I think we're at a part where it's going to be a predictable move through canon, you hit us on the head with this curveball! And yet, looking back I should have expected it. It’s been plain to Hermione how much pain Severus is feeling over his obligation to Dumbledore (made even more difficult by the confusing tangle of emotions he feels toward the man and his guilt over his part in assisting Voldemort’s rise)…of course she wouldn’t just leave him alone to deal with his pain. Of course she would be there to help carry the burden and the guilt. I love how in the story it isn’t just Severus nobly protecting Hermione from danger, or a pure-hearted Hermione bringing Severus’ blackened soul into the light. Rather it’s a true partnership, with them both fighting together in the dirt and darkness, always there to lend a hand when the other becomes bogged down by the mud, by the hate and the fear. I remember there’s a line in Second Life where marriage is described as saving each other over and over again, and I think that that sentiment is beautifully exemplified in Lay Me Low. (P.S. - And thank for having Severus not fighting for an end (the death of Dumbledore, fulfillment of a promise to protect Lily’s son) but a beginning (the beach, the garden, the black-eyed boy and wild-haired girl, a future).)

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Kelly. To even compare LML with a masterpiece like Second Life is like winning an Oscar to me!! I have been overwhelmed with the response I've had to this story, and believe me it makes me want to give readers the best I can. Thank you so much for your amazing feedback. It is so life-affirming when readers like yourself can see the picture I'm painting and appreciate it for what it is.

Holy freeking wow! That was. Seriously. Amazing. So, about a third of the way through the chapter I waned to start telling you how elevated your prose seemed, and how fluid creative and appropriate your metaphors were. The emotional closeness between the characters was moving and lovely. But, you know, I couldn't tear my eyes away. And then the tone changed, and the story continued--and for such a long installment, you didn't seem to overwork a thing. You also: stoked my ire with Harry and Dumbledore, pulled my heartstrings exquisitely and raised my hopes. Way to leave us hanging though! ah, lol. This was a masterwork of a chapter--and you deserve a Snape-like "Good Girl" as a starter; I'm sure you can come up with the rest. ... Cheers! :-)

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I will take Snape calling me a 'Good Girl' as payment anyday of the week :) I really appreciate your comments and feedback - it is so encouraging and uplifting. Thank you!

Humongous cheer! Yes! I know men think there's something good about being able to hold off, but I've always loved when men are overwhelmed into climax and taken it as a huge compliment. It was completely right for Snape to be unable to stop himself. It would have been superior and not equal for him to hold himself in check because of some notion of Hermione's virginity. Because then you give him ten thousand beautiful virginities of his own. Sleeping with someone. Spooning. Masturbating because a pretty girl asks to see. It's not just Hermione who'll have an assaulter erased from her memory on hands and knees. The more firsts he permits with the two of them, the more innocence he's letting himself claim and own. This is beautiful. It even makes me soften toward Dumbledore and his own devastated innocent plea at the end, which was a perfect, perfect touch.

Author's Response: Thank you, Lorrie. Once again, you homed in on one of my favourite bits, which no one else seemed to really appreciate. I loved the idea of so many 'firsts' for Severus. These two have a long way to go, though, and many trials to bear...
