Reviews for Lay Me Low

One of the things that really galled me about JKR's description of the Wizarding world was Azkaban. People were seemingly thrown into this circle of Hell for anything from a minor offense to a vicious murder. There was no regard for the severity -- or lack thereof -- of the crime. And if THAT weren't bad enough, they had dementors to suck all the hope out of you. That someone who isn't even PROVEN guilty, but just awaiting trial could be held under these conditions is appalling. Poor Hermione! It seems that the Wizarding world does not have much to recommend it outside of being able to use magic. They are just as corrupt and wrong-headed as Muggles... but with enough power to make them dangerous as well. As both Voldemort and Dumbledore clearly demonstrated. Two sides of the same coin... fighting on opposite sides of the war... but equally corrupt and power-mad... and dangerous. Anyway, I'm glad that Hermione and Severus got their HEA after all they've been through. And I'm glad that they went back to the school; desert sun would NOT do their English complexions any favors, and all the magic in the world wouldn't turn back the hands of time for Severus a SECOND time! Geez, guys: use sunscreen!

Author's Response: Oh, I'm sure they used something - wouldn't want to get those sensitive parts burned ! ;) I hated, simply hated writing about Azkaban, in fact, I'd written a HUGE piece on it, talking about her time there, and Jules made me throw it out - it was at least another 2K words about her time there. She said, quite rightly, that it was too much, and the reader would probably sink into depression with all my gruesome detail. We changed that part of the story quite a lot, as I recall. No, sometimes the Wizarding world is just pants at taking care of itself - it's sort of an all-or-nothing culture. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story.

Once again, your words painted a vivid picture in my mind of all the action. I couldn't help but hope that you were writing the bit about Death and the Between from some sort of half-remembered experience. What a comforting thought to know that all those that we love and have been loved by will be there to greet us as we make the transition. And Death himself was quite charming, but then I have always thought that he would be. A wonderfully written chapter!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I can't tell you how vivid 'Between' is in my mind. I see it quite clearly; I don't know if it is memory or note, but it was truly one of the most vivid images I have ever been given. I think Death would be quite gentle with those who comes to him, especially those who come willingly, ready to greet him at last (again!)

In this world today of trying to counter rape culture, it made me so very mad (on behalf of the characters) when Snape accused Hermione of "flaunting herself," essentially asking for it. I hope that there's some sort of apology on his part, or an awareness on Hermione's part of how in the wrong he was to make that comment, somewhere down the line. That out of the way—This is looking to be a very good fic, and I'm anticipating reading more. I came here from the HPFanficPoll on LJ.

Author's Response: I am glad that you found this via the fanpoll, and I am glad you are angry on behalf of the characters. It's always thrilling to achieve the results you hoped for when writing certain situations.. I hope you will continue to enjoy the story. Thank you for giving it a try.

Oh, my, Sweetie! I knew you could write love and lust, but who knew you could write battle and gore! I am so fucking impressed! I could actually SEE everything happening right in front of me, you described everything so well. I think that this is one of my favorite chapters, not just for how well the scenes were written, but because this is so unlike what you usually do -- and yet you did it splendidly! You really stretched and grew as a writer here! Well done, you!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, sweetie! You are just so dear to me, and I'm so glad you are enjoying the story. Oh, year, Lay Me Low definitely made a writer out of me - of course, it took me over a year to get up the nerve to write the final battle.

i'm so glad that Severus had a chance to be with Reg again... to let him know how much he cared for him. And I'm also glad that Severus is coming back! But I pretty much figured on THAT! This IS a Teddy story, after all, and there ARE a few chapters left.... AND I still have time to read another one! Hurrah!

Author's Response: Yes, I really enjoyed writing this chapter. It is one of my biggest learning experiences. But Jules was the author of that breathtaking kiss.

Fuck me, but I didn't see THAT coming! Hopefully, it is not too late for Severus to find his way back to his body. Thank goodness it's still early; I have time to read the next chapter....

Author's Response: Oh, good, I was afraid we would have to put the story into the freezer! LOL

Oooo! Severus was SUCH a bloody prick here! If I had been Hermione, I would have hexed him pretty badly as he was leaving! And yeah... I, too, think Bella is MUCH scarier than Voldemort. Voldy hurts/kills people because he's on a power trip. Bella does it for FUN. *Shivers*

Author's Response: Oh, this was so hard to write! Poor Jules, when she sent it back to me, she said, "Man, this was hard to read - after all they've been through!" I felt terrible for them, but I had to show they had a tether and both of them were pretty close to being at the end of it.

This chapter had so much to love about it! Luna Lovegood, for one thing. I really admired her here... her calm demeanor, the way she seems to know more... to see more... than anyone else around her. So zen. Also, it was good to meet a Ron that I actually liked, LOL! You made him far smarter and more likable than JKR did. I actually teared up at his little exchange at the end with Severus. Oh, no! The Carrows know! Shit, meet fan.

Author's Response: Indeed! Someone wrote lately that it seemed that JKR wrote Ron in the first book as being a pretty sharp guy, but consistently dumbed him down as the books went on. I have to agree; I think he had great potential, but she seemed to only see him as a stooge. And Luna - how can you not love her? Thank you sweetie!
