Reviews for Lay Me Low

You know at first I thought that things were progressing a little too quickly between Snape and Hermione, but I've since changed my mind. It's pitch-perfect pacing, really. They're made for each other, and they're both too grave and vulnerable to engage in that little dance of will-they-won't-they that they usually do in other stories. What they have is profound and beautiful, and have I told you that I love your writing? Haha :) That bit with Hermione's parents hit me like a suckerpunch to my gut. Guh.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! It's strange, but when I first started this story, I had no idea where it would lead. My Muse has literally just told me where to go - he's taken me down some twisting road before, but as long as I've trusted him, he's not stirred me wrong. Thank you - I am a great admirer of your writing, and it means a lot that you like mine.

I love your Madam Pomfrey, she is too underexposed in both canon and fanfiction. All your characters are great, actually. I also really love how you've portrayed Voldemort. His genius as a leader is glanced over in most stories I've read. He fosters distrust and envy among his followers, setting himself up as some sort of god figure to lesser men. I've always thought he rules through pleasure, and not through pain, if that makes sense. It's always that which we love that destroys us, and he knows this all too well. And I've said this so many times before, but I adore your Severus. He's such a bad, bad, damaged man, so vulnerable and repressed. Do you know the actor Tim Roth? I keep imagining him as Snape when I'm reading your stories. I revere Alan Rickman, but somehow Tim Roth fits with your writing.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I think Voldemort would use any means of coercing his followers, but he would know he had to be careful - if he tipped too far over, he would lose his strongest soldiers. The Bellatrixes of the world will always follow the likes of him, but it's the Severuses of the world that get things done. Actually, the Severus I see here (and see in every fic I write) is Sempraseverus' depiction of Severus. He has a passing resemblance to Alan Rickman, whom I adore like you read about, but there is something exclusively hers about the way she draws him, and she and I have always had this great partnership of art and story. I have one of her originals illustrating one of the early chapters of Lay Me Low, and I wouldn't take a million dollars for it! Hers is the Severus that my Muse gave me as my template from the very beginning, and her Hermione is the one I write as well. I guess you could say Sempra is my visual Muse.

God! I want to hurt Sirius Black! I want to castrate him and make him eat it and when he digests it, I'll make him eat it again. Ugh, such convincing writing.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I actually don't have too much against Sirius, but I did think he was a douchebag as a young man, and a bit of a loose canon as an adult. I do think he would have been a bit of a horndog, and being unable to leave Grimmauld Place, he probably used Hermione to boost his flagging ego more than anything else, until it backfired on him.

I like your Snape. He's so very complex, so fallible and bollocksed-up. I've had too much of the mean and repressed yet ultimately noble Snape, I think. I like that he is aware of his intentions, and that he loathes himself for even thinking that he wants her, but he knows that being the man he is, he will inevitably succumb to the temptation. I think he's trying to convince himself that his desires are licentious in nature because he knows himself as a sinner, but maybe Hermione will convince him that wanting a bit of light in your life isn't such a bad thing.

Author's Response: This fic has been a revelation to me personally; it's the one where I realised just how important it is to listen to my Muse. When I wrote the Prologue, I had no idea where this story would go, and it has gone where it listed according to the whim of DMuse. It also taught me how to be a better descriptive writer for sure! But I'm so glad you are enjoying it. It's been hard, trusting in that spiritual advisor and allowing him to drive, but it's been a worthwhile journey. I'm just glad it's been one that others have enjoyed taking with me.

I hope I'm not annoying you with my fawning comments, but it has to be said. You are so skilled with balancing all the elements of your story; the despicable and the tender, the wit and the intimacy, the cadence of the dialogue, so that it seems to flow so naturally that I would believe it if I've never read the books and you told me this is part of the series. I've never really noticed the appeal of a coarse Northern accent before picturing Snape speaking it.

Author's Response: My darling, a compliment is never annoying, and I don't think you're fawning. I appreciate your comments so much. Thank you - this is the kind of review a writer prays to the gods for. I am just thrilled to bits with what you have said about my writing. Thank you. And yes, a Northern accent in a deep voice is dead sexy, I think! :)

So, yeah. You're a phenomenal writer. I love you.

Author's Response: Wow, babe, thank you! I was just bragging on you to my beta, Jules - you're pretty amazing yourself. I'm really glad you are enjoying my fics. It means a lot.

Ugh, those Horcruxes. They evilly played Severus (and the others, likely) by mixing enough truth in with the lies, enough flattery in with the fears, to be cruelly effective. And wow. If I had to pick a point in this story to have to wait for updates, this is a fabulous place to do it! I felt like cheering by the end of the chapter, with the affirmation and declarations of comradeship expressed by everyone in the Order. So uplifting. :D

Author's Response: Thank you! I am working on the next chapter, but it is the toughest thing I've ever written in my LIFE! I am determined to make this as good as I can, so it might be a little while before it's posted, but it will be. Thank you so much for reading this epic from start to now, and being so incredibly supportive and encouraging about every chapter. It means more than I can ever say.

"We’re going to fight to honour that man of yours" - Oh, Martin Granger, I love you to the bottom of your Huffledor self! And what an amazing reunion scene! I loved the lemons, but admit I kept wondering if they'd thrown up a Silencing Charm, considering all the others in the cottage! :D

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm sure they cast a Silencing Charm - but if they didn't, I'll bet Luna did for them ;) I do love the Grangers - I enjoy writing them a lot.
