Half Blood Outcast2011.10.17 - 12:09AM27: Twenty Six: The Ballad of Regulus BlackSigned
dearest, that was an amazing chapter!! the plot development was 100% sincere and i think you would've done Rowling herself proud with this one. I love how you make Severus' insecurities so human and believable. I'm looking forward to seeing your next update. this was the lovely end to a wonderful weekend that i needed!

Author's Response: Oh, thank you so much, Half Blood. I really appreciate that! It's funny - the previous chapter was like pulling teeth - this one was like falling off a log. I'm glad that you enjoyed it - it actually becomes a bit clearer down the line why I chose to break the momentum and put in this mini-story, but everyone seems okay with it, so I'm just tickled that you feel this way.

"In spite of the sadness he felt, the grim, future that awaited them, he was not meeting it alone. He had brought her back from Between. She would never have to go there again. Severus Granger-Snape had unlearned how to be a coward. He had been the actor, the sufferer and the receiver. He would learn to be her hero." Brava, Teddy. This is beautiful, and it is a lovely description of the healing power of love. Beth

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Beth. This was a very difficult chapter to write, and it went through a lot of editing. All kudos to stgulik, who's patient insistence that I could do better paid off in a chapter that I ended up being very proud of. Thank you as always for your kindness and encouragement.

Lovely little chapter! You're right, it was important for Hermione to know what happened to RAB - really, one of the only "good" friends Severus ever had. It's telling of their relationship too, that he's so open with her.

Author's Response: Thanks, babe. I think we all needed a breather from the last three chapters, which were all fairly intense. I have had this chapter in mind for ages, but wasn't quite sure where it went, but I should have known DMuse would tell me, and of course, he did. The next chapter is in its final run through, so hopefully there won't be too big a gap. I was hoping to finish LML before NaNo in November, but that's not going to happen, so I'm going to get as far as I can before I devote November to original fiction - then I'll get right back on this one. I can see the end, so I want y'all to see it, too!

An update, an update! *dances* :) I have to say, while slash does nothing for me, I have had a bit of a thing for a Snape/Regulus friendship/unrequited love relationship ever since reading Open Your Eyes by lilyevans_snape. I don’t like Severus to have had past relationships, but I do like the idea that yes, SOMEONE was there, someone was able to look at him and see the potential, the beauty there. And yes, I can see how Severus, who was attracted to Lily’s easy magnetism and beauty could be drawn to those same qualities in Regulus. Poor Reg. Despite Severus’ and his vastly different backgrounds, it’s sad to think that neither boy really had any other option but to join the Death Eaters. Regulus because of his family, and Snape because, well, who else ever gave a damn about him? I can see how Voldemort (not in his post-GoF incarnation, but during his saner days) could seem a powerful beacon to lost boys seeking power, acceptance, and purpose. And Severus and Hermione’s combined magic fading the Dark Mark…YES! I’ve often read of it fading or disappearing after Voldemort’s death, but of COURSE their love would be stronger than Voldemort’s tainted magic, of COURSE they don’t need to wait for Voldemort’s death; to heal their scars all they need is each other. Love it. Though hopefully that won’t end up causing problems for Severus. Oh Teddy, has it been a year already? Hopefully we’ll have many more years ahead of us to savor your stories. They’re never simple, never easy (as if a relationship with Snape could be!), but always satisfying, in every sense of the word.

Author's Response: Kelly, when I see a review like this, my heart just soars and I was thrilled. Yes, I am no slash fan at all, but I understand the need for young boys (and girls) to experiment when they are young, and I have read one or two SS/RAB slash fics that I enjoyed. (Older Snape slash just squicks me out something awful!) I spent a long time talking to the hubs about how teenage boys will 'crush' their friends, and I tried really hard to hit that tone here. I have always liked the Regulus Black character, and he was so frightfully young when he died (17 or so, I think). I wanted him to have the zeal of an idealist, and he truly thought he was doing Severus a favour introducing him to Voldemort. Yes, love is going to save them, and it will be noticed, but in the end, Severus will know he has been loved - and not just by Hermione. I cannot thank you enough for your encouragement - writing SS/HG fic has been the most fun I think I've ever had, and it has given me more fulfillment that almost anything else in my life, mainly because of folks like you. I love writing stories that give others pleasure, and I hope to be able to do that for many years to come.

What I love about this story - apart from its wonderfully intricate plot and fantastic writing - is that Severus has a northern voice. The way you write his dialogue is wonderful and I hear him with a northern accent - especially saying 'lass' and in this chapter (which also made me giggle, because I used to say it all the time) 'minging' - That just gives me such a great feeling. It's not often that people realise that Spinner's End is in Manchester, so he should have an accent. I know that he spent most of his life at Hogwarts (and if Lucius Malfoy had anything to do with it, aristocrats) but his accent would be something that couldn't change that much, so I always thought he should at least have a slight accent, or particular turns of phrase that link back to Northerners. Anyway, I've gone on waaaaay too long - to sum up, I'm fascinated with this story - it's one of my favourites.

Author's Response: Thank you so much. I have a real soft spot for the Northern male ;) and I wish they would have given him that little frisson of accent in the films. Perhaps they didn't want to give it away, I'm not sure, but I've always thought he would be that way. Even as educated as he is, he would still have that lovely Northern edge to his voice. I'm sure he would have tried to 'tart it up' a bit, hanging around with all the Purebloods, but I love a Mancunian accent, and when I hear AR in Blow Dry, I think, "Yeah, they should have given him a bit of this in the film. Then I really would have melted every time Severus appeared (like I didn't already!) I'm so glad you are enjoying the story, and I hope you will continue to. And believe me, there is no such thing as a glowing review being too long :)

In Canon, Regulus did remove the horcrux. So, this is AU and the horcrux is real ?

Author's Response: Well, we are seeing this from Severus' POV, and perhaps he doesn't have all the information. As we know, even Dumbledore kept some things from him.

Very moving and deep, such an incredible intimate connection that Severus and Hermione. It's fantastic. Poor Reg, so sad. Amazing chapter.

Author's Response: Thank you so much. I realise this was a bit of a strange chapter, but the last two were so intense I thought we all needed a bit of a break. I hope it comes across as such, and it does have bearing on later chapters.

This chapter has spiked my interest in the only worthwhile Black. I loved the flashback! As always you continue to amaze me with your narrative prowess. ( ooh, I love that word!)

Author's Response: Prowess - that is a very Frollo kind of word, isn't it? I'm so glad you enjoyed the chapter, and I hope it didn't send your FrolloMuse off in a huff. Thank you for stopping by and reading - you know how much your input means to me, precious.
