Reviews for Lay Me Low

"He was so tired of feeling badly made, like an ugly doll, pieced together with mismatched parts. He didn’t seem capable of fixing it, either." ~ This line just gets to me. We all periodically spot the behavior patterns in our lives, for good or ill. Severus has spotted his again and it just makes him tired. Poor man.

Author's Response: Thank you, sweetheart. This may be one of the toughest fics I will ever complete, but I cannot say in the end that I didn't come away with a better understanding of the enigma that is Severus Snape. I've really had to learn how to live in his head. There is such a sadness to the character. That's why I try so hard to bring hope to him as well. He has to know he's worth more than this.

Oh wow Teddy that was sooo good. Your portrayal of Severus as a new death eater is perfect. I was reading it with increasing excitement thinking "yes thats exactly as I imagined it" Though I always saw Lucius as being more involved with his recruitment than RAB thats really the only difference. It is not hard to understand how a boy like him was seduced by a world like that. And Reg turning from the dark lord was so painful, I was close to tears for him...for them both. Wonderful writing as always if I could give it 11 I would. Looking forward to the next chapter..as always.

Author's Response: Thank you so much. My reasoning for telling the story in this manner was that, as Lucius had been so much older than him, I always felt that he would have been another 'role model', but because of Lucius' pureblood attitude, I didn't think he'd pay much attention to Severus until they were both fellow DEs and Lucius had to acknowledge him. And by then, Lucius was a father himself. Reg was more a contemporary and more of a friend. In my little world, of course! Thank you for your wonderful words - they are like the best dark chocolate!

I'm so glad I've come to this story with so many chapters ahead of me: it's just so wonderfully, terribly addictive that I don't think I could stand the wait for each new chapter. I've only read your work on FFnet before now, but I can honestly say that, amazing as those stories are, this leaves them all behind. I'm just so happy I have so many more chapters ahead of me!

Author's Response: Thank you so much - I am so glad you are enjoying the fic - and once again, I apologise for the mixup - the real Marianne and I have had a good laugh, and I hope you did as well. I am updating this story on a regular basis and it will be hopefully finished sometime in the very near future - I have NaNoWriMo staring me in the face in a couple of weeks, but after that I'm putting all my efforts into finishing Lay Me Low.

I was so moved by this chapter that I read it twice! Reg's story was heartbreaking, yet it was so good to see Severus as having had a good friend one upon a time. This particular fic really shines for me in a number of ways. 1) Severus is not manipulative. He's just really "real" 2) S&H's shared connection and understanding of each other. 3) S&H's "it's you and me against them" attitude, basically a unified front. 4) Your interpretation of Severus, as in where he's from and how that all ties in with his personality. I've mentioned in a past review how much I love that he calls Hermione "Lass". I could go on and on about him...but back to Reg! The poor guy was conflicted on so many levels! Raised on pureblood mentality, yet realized too late the evil potential of Voldie...and he probably harboured some guilt for having been the one to encourage Severus to "sign up". By the way, the comparison of the post initiation revel to a Bosch painting was spot on! Your ability to create such vivid imagery (by details or metaphors, etc.,)never ceases to amaze me. I apologize for the rambling. ;) Once again, I am left wanting more...thank you!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, sweetie. This chapter was part of the story, but I never could find the right place to put it. I thought after three intense chapters, everyone might want to take a break, and hear Severus regale us with Reg's story, sad though it was. I'm glad you appreciate Severus' 'voice' in this story. I've had so many reviews to this subject, and I just always think that, as a Northerner, he would keep that Northern touch, whether he wanted to or not. I'm sure hanging about with Reg and the Malfoys shined him up a little, but Severus is and will always remain a Manc boy from the wrong side of the tracks. What he does with this is, ultimately, up to him, and that's how I've always tried to play it here, and in many of my stories, and I'm thrilled that readers can spot it and approve of it.

Oh Teddy I really enjoyed this one. I'm going to admit, I've never really been too bothered about RAB but this tale was mesmerising! Of course your terrific portrayal of Sev as a vulnerable, insecure, hormonal, Mancunian is spot on...and in 1978 I was surrounded by hundreds of them. Hell I even deigned to go out with some of the lucky ones. LOL! It is not difficult to understand why Sev would have been so enamoured by the DeathEater lifestyle which I agree would have ben cult-like in its method to recruit by offering drugs and sex. I also enjoy Severus' humanity and normalcy that you shoe in his relationship with Reg. All in all a triumphant chapter. Well done, Cock! Now that's a real Bet Lynch soubriquet! Best wishes, Love Ali xxxx.

Author's Response: Alright, cockers? I had this chapter in mind for a long time, but didn't know where best to put it. After three grueling chapters, I thought it was for the best that we had a breather and could regroup. I tried very hard to give him the voice of a 17 year old Manc boy, and if you did not find it lacking, I feel I've done my job properly. As always, Ali, I appreciate and look forward to your feedback so much, because you totally 'get' my Severus, and why he is the way he is. I had another review from this chapter of someone saying they really loved the 'Northern voice' that I gave Severus. That made me mucho happy!
