Reviews for The Man Who Sold the World

One of my favorite books is "1984". The tone of this piece is so reminiscent of Orwell, yet the characters are true to JK Rowling's vision. Excellent job!

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I have to admit, I've yet to read _1984_, but I know the basic principle. Lurve, Meggory

This is such a great story. It is reminiscent of World War II, yet has the air of modernity that allows hope. Poor Severus. I don't know who I feel sorry for the most, though; Severus or Hermione. Hermione may be living better than Severus, she at least has food and is able to make a living, but Severus still has his freedom. Are there any other wraiths? Since the tattoos on Hermione's arm are names of those who she thinks are dead (and since Severus isn't), does that mean that there will be some surprising characters making comebacks? I just have so many questions! Please update soon!

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I think I feel sorrier for Severus, but then again, I know exactly what he's gone through. There are more wraiths, but they aren't really a prominent part of the story. Yet. Maybe. I haven't decided. Really, I'm just writing this on the fly. (Hangs head ashamedly). So far, I know of one character making a surprising comeback, but that's really really later. I should write the next couple chapters this weekend (yay long weekend!!!) as long as the Queen doesn't distract me. Lurve, Meggory

I adore this story, and it keeps getting better and better. You are able to write dark scenes without overtly unrealistic tendencies...most people would have succumbed to a Lucius rape scene in the above chapter, or would have given both Hermione and Severus defiant personalities even after years of being broken. Well done, my dear, well done. Keep producing this wonderful stuff!

Author's Response: Thanks for the encouraging review! I'm glad someone picked up the subtleties of my version of Lucius. He has far too much finesse to give into brutality; he likes games and control and power. As for the defiance, I couldn't possibly write a story in which these characters are still plotting to bring down Voldemort in one fell swoop. They know they lost, and now they're dealing with it. Severus has especially troubling things to work out, and that will be coming soon. Lurve, Meggory

I was drawn to your story by the title. (Yes, I am aware of the David Bowie song.) Very interesting reading. How did Hermione get her job? I would think that at least a few other people would walk the same neighborhoods as Hermione if the underground is as full as is described. I look forward to your other chapters.

Author's Response: Yay! Someone knows my favourite Bowie song! Nirvana did a good cover. As for the emptiness of the streets, Hermione walks in a corridor whose posted function is the transportation of large vehicles (trucks, tanks, whatever). I'm sure there are other ways to walk to her job--but then again, it's dangerous. Hermione still has her streak of practicality; walking gets her there faster, but there's the possibility of being injured or being caught by Death Eater patrols looking for someone to play with. As for the job, it was necessary for the story. ;D I think she may have been recruited for the job. Thanks for the review and the good questions! Lurve, Meggory

Delicious. At the end of this chapter, I felt Hermione's burning desire to find freedom, even if it was only ten words. Those spoke louder than a great deal of the chapter.

I think you are just beginning to show the Lucius Malfoy JKR hints at, the true evil bastard beneath the polish. I really cannot wait to see more of him, and more of his darkness.

You are an amazing writer, I just get so into your work that it is almost as if I am there. Your chapters of such carefully crafted prose have drawn me in, and you have only just begun to address the plot. It's beautiful, simply beautiful.

I finally did see some of the VE Day celebrations. I was downtown the weekend thereof, and caught the tail end of a ceremony at the Unknown Soldier's tomb. It's my favourite spot here in the city. Year round, you can find poppies, poems, flowers, wreaths, and the like set reverently on the tomb. Every Rememberance Day (this is an unofficial tradition, it just started spontaneously) all those who attend the services at the memorial place their poppies on the tomb. For some reason, that act makes me think of Hermione's tattoo... she bears poppies of her own. Just beautiful.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter, and more interesting things are afoot. I'm glad you got to go to the VE celebrations. I thought the National War Memorial was fantastic (I saw it at night in February, and it was absolutely gorgeous). Lurve, Meggory

Doesn't Georgina need to eat too? Too bad Lucius doesn't want eggs or meat for breakfast; that would be nice for the staff to take home. Percy can't get his glaucoma treated at St Mungo's? (I'm not eager for him to get healed, just wondering if there IS a St Mungo's, or healers who can make potions.) Can she let Severus go to her place, at least to read the newspaper? Ooh, this is such a good story!

Author's Response: Thanks for the review, and excellent questions. I don't like eggs for breakfast, so my characters don't either. Heh. As for Percy, he wears glasses in the book; if his poor eyesight was treatable, don't you think the Weasleys would have sacrificed something to afford to get them fixed? I sure do, so Percy's pretty blind. I have glasses, so Percy's blind too. Heh. Severus will venture out soon, don't worry! Lurve, Meggory
