If you're especially clumsy (like me), and, say, have to start the car on a slope, you can also manage to have the engine make a horrid noise and then stop (and then you have to start it again). But they do have to stretch their food as long as they can; who knows when they might get their next meal? We'll have a very starchy diet, because yogourt doesn't keep very well. I particularly liked the exchange when Hermione asks Snape why he didn't Obliviate Seamus. It shows the humanity that tempers his survival instinct.
