I loved this chapter! The interactions between Severus, Dumbledore, and Hermione were spot on! I especially loved the introduction of a scheming Sorting Hat. What a novel (but very believable) idea!

"But Hermione’s childhood had been much different; the Daughter of Dentists had learned that nothing came without a price and a lot of drilling." I didn't know whether to laugh with glee or shudder here. Great line!

I wonder at Hermione's belief that Dumbledore would not expect her to stay at Hogwarts. She's wearing Gryffindor robes. I would think that at the very least, Dumbledore would wonder about her apparent association with Hogwarts. I find it especially suspicious that Dumbledore would head off to lunch and then Hogsmede without getting more than Hermione's name. While he may not be suspicious of her, I do expect that he must be at least curious about this unknown girl showing up on his office doorstep. Dumbledore either knows more than he's letting on, or he's already scheming about Hermione's presence!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I think the Hat is SCARY. I wanted to portray the Hat as at least scheming and manipulative. After all, it belonged to Gryffindor, and we all know how scheming and manipulative Dumbledore - a Gryffindor himself - can be.

Which leads to Dumbledore... Yes, he has REASONS for avoiding Hermione. And they will be revealed later. And the Gryffindor robe catch is great there. Good job for picking up on details!

And the Daughter of Dentists line was one of my favorite to write, as well as one I think is especially revealing about her character and motivations. Thanks for the thoughtful review! I'll look forward to hearing more of your responses later.

Excellent! Not sure why Dumbledore would just let Hermione be, and ignore her-- that doesn't make much sense, unless of course he's trying to manipulate Snape and Hermione together. :D Go Dumbles, you clever monkey!

Author's Response: I think the master manipulator may have several reasons for letting her be... not the least of which is observing. I think our Dumbles likes to get his hunches fairly secured before he outwardly investigates them.

Thanks for reviewing!

Oh, so now she will go to Hogsmeade and perhaps hear a prophesy? The idea for this story is great. I really look forward to how it will unfold.

Author's Response: I think that's a definite possibility. Thanks for reviewing!

A lovely chapter. I like this uncertainty.

Author's Response: Thanks! That's a good way of putting it: uncertainty.

Wonderful!

And the plot thickens. I love the way Hermione shoved her muggle heritage in Snape's face. Truly wonderful. Please update soon!

Author's Response: Ha! "And the plot thickens." I've always loved that phrase. And the Muggle line was my favorite to write. Thanks!

As good as the first one. The curiosity Hermione and Severus feel for each other is compelling. I'm curious to see how Trelawney's interview will go.

Author's Response: Thank you! I like being able to play with them with no preconceived notions (on his part) and too many conflicting notions (on hers). I think it gives them as neutral ground as possible to start on. Well, if "neutral" is "lava" anyway... :) The Trelawney interview is in chapter three! Thanks again!

**edit -- the previous review is my own; my browser logged me off for reasons unknown... I don't want to take up the space by double-posting the whole thing, so I'll just add here my praise for your complete and utter lack of cliches - brilliantly refreshing!

Author's Response: Good to know! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

*Delighted at the update* This was one great chapter! There was so much going on, from the undercurrents of thoughts that Severus, Hermione and Albus have in the same single setting, to the brilliant back story - so very plausible given what we know, canonically, about Hermione and Severus. I've long been of the mind that Harry wasn't the only Gryffindor whom the Hat had given Slytherin as an option; and what the Sorting Hat comments to Harry doesn't give credence to the idea that the Hat itself wouldn't place muggleborns in Slytherin (since Harry's blood status was never brought into question - only his personality traits and characteristics).

I appreciated the subtlety with which Severus' regard for Hermione was spun with a more sensual tone of physical attraction. I also greatly appreciated the juxtaposition between Hermione's regard of her former professor, and Severus' own perception thereof, as well as the implications, as far as he was concerned, of this novel reaction to his person.

Dumbledore's mannerisms are an absolute gem - I love the extent to which they capture the man's character, and the great picture they make of him when combined with Hermione's own perception; this is a character filter where we don't see Dumbledore taken for granted: Hermione is well-read, and also well-aware of the man's greatness, and her reaction to him, as well as her regard for him, reflect that, and paint a far more realistic picture of "The only one He ever feared" than the canonic Harry filter does.

His robes billowed behind him.

That truly made me laugh out loud; it was such a simple, effective bridge between the Professor of old and the Professor of new, something that could simply be 'appreciated', without the antagonism of trying to pass verdict on his guilt.

The last two paragraphs explored a great facet of Hermione's: what I see as her more-or-less inherent quality of not taking anything for granted - "she couldn't stay at Hogwarts without an invitation", coupled with her brilliantly organized mind (despite Dumbledore's diversionary idle chatter) - "she had never gotten to have her intended conversation with the Headmaster."

Author's Response: Grr... I wrote a really LONG response to this, and then I pressed "submit" and the damn thing got rid of it. I'm going to try again, but it won't be as in-depth as it was before. I'm sorry.

First of all, THANK YOU for such a thoughtful review. It meant the world to me! I had originally been worried about writing so much inside the characters' heads. I write plays for a theatre company, and we believe very strongly in *action* as a defining feature. While text is undoubtedly important, action is key. So, I was worried that I was writing too much inside their heads... but then I realized that quite a bit of action was going to happen in chapters three and four, so I ignored myself and went with instinct. I'm glad it worked out!

The Hat: I think the Hat is SCARY. As Molly Weasley (I think) said about the infamous diary, never trust anything if you can't tell where it keeps its brain. I feel like that Hat is manipulative and has its own agenda (as seen with its changing song each year).

Writing Severus and Hermione has been a lot of fun. I see Severus as someone who was once tormented by events in his youth, but who has since done a lot of growing up (I imagine some realizations in the actualities of being a Death Eater had a big part in that). While the past will undoubtedly boil over from time to time, for the most part, he's quick to dismiss it. He learned from it. And I think his ability to focus on his actions in the present are part of what make him so perceptive. He's also incredibly self-aware. He accepts that others judge him harshly, because he judges everyone harshly. The fact that she is WARY is unusual for him, and he's perceptive enough to recognize the distinction even if he doesn't understand it. And not understaning is extremely frustrating, a trait he shares with Hermione.

I agree that Hermione wouldn't take anything for granted. She doesn't even take MAGIC for granted. She works very hard, and I think a big part of that comes from her Muggle upbringing. With parents in the workforce, she has certainly learned that any skill comes with a lot of hard work (and drilling). Magic, no matter how inherent, must also be a skill that can only be refined through learning and practicing. Her parents weren't born dentists, after all. Certainly, the abilities were there, but only with schooling and experience could they own their own practice. Furthermore, Hermione has to work at her friendships. She probably never had many friends; her intelligence which she refuses to put on a back burner has undoubtedly distanced her from her peers. She would never assume she was welcome without receiving the invitation. It's great that we're on the same page about Hermione never taking anything for granted. :)

Dumbledore is just fun to write. And master manipulator he is, I belive he uses that idle-chatter facade as a diversionary tactic. He's always watching. I think he wants to watch her a bit longer before they have that conversation. And Hermione's canny enough to know it. As is Severus, for that matter.

Furthermore, in the series, Dumbledore is Harry's rescuer and top father figure, as well as the first person to pay *special* attention to Harry. Harry has a much harder time recognizing the man's humanity and fallibility. Coming from a much different background, Hermione knows he's only a man, a great and powerful wizard, but also simply a person. Compassionate as she is, she can recognize his greatness while not discounting his faults, and love him for all of it.

I can't thank you enough for all the thought you put into your review. You rock! And I'll look forward to reading more of your comments later in the story.
