The story begins in Hermione’s fifth year at Hogwarts as Severus recalls memories of what might have been and laments the lack of a soul mate to share his passion for potions. Flashbacks are used throughout the 3-part series to depict events portraying Professor Snape as a student and later, as an adult. Hermione uses a spell book, from the library at 12 Grimmauld Place, to discover her soul mate. She visualises a relationship first with Ron, then Viktor, before she realises they are not right for her. She encounters adventures on the path to finding her true soul mate. The story is told in three parts. Part I chronicles the fifth year at Hogwarts. Part II begins the summer prior to returning to Hogwarts and loosely follows the sixth year. Part III takes a divergent path after Hermione attends Professor Slughorn’s supper, in sixth year.
