I must admit, the only reason I read this in the first place was because the title "A Rose for Hermione" reminded me of Faulkner's own short story, "A Rose for Emily." I was pleased to see that you finally acknowledged him at the end, even if it wasn't in the disclaimer. I can't say that your story holds up against Faulkner's, but no author really can compete with him. Either way, it's nice to see something familiar transformed into one of my favorite genres. I'm glad you finished with the rose properly - as a means of putting Miss Grierson to rest - rather than as a metaphor of a "better place and time." For non Faulkner readers, I'm sure there was a certain level of mystery involved but ultimately I didn't get that complete "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" feeling or the dreadful edge of suspense that I got from "A Rose for Emily" reading this. Maybe that's not what you were going for... either way, thanks and keep up the good work.

Author's Response: First of all, I am uncertain if I should be offended by your review or not. Surely you didn't think I was trying to compete with Faulkner? Secondly, if I had put my note before the story in the disclaimer, many might have guessed about the plot. Let's hope you don't believe I slighted him on purpose or tried to take credit for a particular plot device that he used in his short story.

As stated in the genre type, I wanted many things to be mysterious--everyone's motives and what happened to Hermione and between Hermione and Snape. I certainly didn't want this to be as creepy as "A Rose for Emily," or I would have worked things differently, such as her sleeping with a corpse, killing Snape herself just to keep him, attempting to cover up the stink of his death, etc. His work was only an influence on this story and not something I attempted to compete with or recreate. For non-Faulkner readers and Faulkner readers alike, there should be a certain level of mystery. That has nothing to do with it. I mean, do you know who sent the dementor, what she was truly up to, ron's motives, or if Percy's story is really how it went? There are just many different things.

That's definitely not the ending I was going for, but I can see how you could wonder about it. I actually had a couple of themes going, but not many people have commented on all of them. Either they weren't noticed or the more obvious ones took precedence over them. Thanks for the review either way. Perhaps next time I'll make certain to point out that I am in no way trying to compete or think that I am worthy of any author that has influenced me, such as Faulkner. But then again, perhaps not. :)

I didn't make the link with A Rose for Emily until you mentioned the hair on the pillow, and suddenly it clicked - much as it did when I first read the short story. I like the way you've written this, and the various unknowns make it all the more interesting. Thank you!

Author's Response: Thanks. I hoped to keep some things a bit "mysterious." LOL

I hated A Rose for Emily... It broke my heart to think that she "loved" someone so much that she continued to live and sleep with his dead body.... Its weird... But great job on the story... As soon as I saw A Rose for Hermione.. I thought hmm... sounds familiar... But really! Great Job!

Author's Response: I agree. And you know what I always think about? The door hadn't been opened in years, but she'd just died. Had she finally tired of him, or could she just no longer travel up the stairs to him as she once had? LOL I always keep thinking of what ifs and such. Thanks for reading this story. Cheers!~

that was so sad. *sniffs* As soon as I read the part wth Hermione sleeping in bed with Snape I immediately thought of Faulkner's "A rose for Emily"... it's also one of my favourite short stories (yup, I'm creepy like that). Still it was wonderfully written, and Percy's so... so cannon, well from my POV at least. Good job.

Author's Response: I hadn't read that in years, but I'm just like you. I like that sort of creepy stuff. I tried to make Percy as "canon" as I could. Pompous git. LOL. Thank you.

Wow. This story is making me think more than I'd planned on this evening. I'll probably come back tomorrow to do a more thorough review. Still thinking....

Author's Response: LOL. Sorry about that. Teehee

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's death. When something is so sudden, it has a tremendous impact. The story was interesting on several levels. Very chilling, Hermione slept next to Snape for fifty years while living as a hermit. I can't see, if they all survive the end, that their friendship would continue enforce. While they all might remain friends, most people tend to follow different paths after school, so in that, I thought your portrayal of what happens to the trio was very interesting and a logical assumption. Sad story, but still, very well done.

Author's Response: I have only one close friend left from school, and we aren't in constant contact, even though she's my son's godmother. Times change. Thank you for reading. I'm glad that you liked it.
