Nothing Left to Lose



Azkaban never changed. Dark, dismal, depressing… Dementors, despite glittering political promises, once again roamed the halls. Hermione gulped her now-lukewarm cocoa as she approached the tiny-windowed door.

“Professor?” she called tentatively.

“Miss Granger.” His voice was odd, frightening.

“Professor Snape, don’t worry; we’ll get you out as soon as we possibly can.” She glimpsed his skeletal form propped up against the icy wall.

“Don’t worry,” he repeated, almost sing-song. His head lolled toward her, and he smiled. “I’m more at peace now than I have ever been, Miss Granger.

“You see, there’s nothing in me for them to take.”




ANs: When GS100 first posted its 'Dementor' challenge, I wasn't particularly interested. But I felt like writing something, so I stuck Severus and a dementor in the same room together, and it occured to me that, particularly without the Shrieking Shack memories, that he had absolutely nothing that a dementor would be interested in. And from there, it pretty much wrote itself…
