A Late Night Meeting: One Shot

by southern_witch_69

I requested a few prompts on my LJ to get me in the writing mood. Flitterkat was kind enough to leave a response for me. Her request is at the end of the story.

Minerva paused in the darkened corridor and strained to listen. Again, she heard it—a small meow, one of greeting. Smirking, she transformed into her Animagus form and padded silently down the stone walkway.

“Hello, Crooks,” she said when she rounded the next corner.

“Minerva,” he said, bowing down as he greeted the castle’s headmistress.

“I thought I recognized your call. What are you doing out this late?”

“There are three mice behind this tapestry in a small hole. I’m hoping they’ll come out.” He gave her the equivalent of a cat’s smirk, his whiskers twitching playfully. “I thought you might like to join me.”

“Might as well,” she said, settling down to gaze at the tapestry for any sign of movement, her tail twitching in anticipation.

“The other reason I left my rooms,” Crooks began, “is because that pesky friend of yours is over for another visit, sitting his bony arse in my favorite chair. Those long looks he gives my familiar is quite annoying.”

“Now, now, Crooks, you know it isn’t only Severus who gives those looks.”

“Are you saying my girl does the same?”

“You know as well as I that when he’s not looking, she’s gazing at him the same way!” Minerva stretched out and got into a more comfortable position. It seemed Crookshanks had more than stalking mice on his mind—he needed to vent.

“Well, it must only be because she feels sorry for him. Maybe she thinks he needs to add a few more mice to his diet!”

Minerva meowed in amusement. “The idea of Severus eating mice!”

“Well, you know what I mean, Headmistress!” Crooks said with a slight hiss.

“I think,” she said, becoming serious, “that you may one day have to deal with sharing Hermione all the time.”

“I hope that day doesn’t come anytime soon,” he grumbled in reply, eyes widening in delight as the tapestry shifted. “Oho! Look…”

For the moment, Severus and Hermione were forgotten, for the chase was on!

Flitterkat requested: Minerva in cat form and Crookshanks gossiping over a mouse or three about the possibility of "those" looks Hermione and Severus give each other when they think the other isn't looking.
