“I wish that you'd never forced me into this,” she said after a long while. “I mean, I've wished that from the start, but I can't help but wonder now if we could have had... I really can't stay with you,” she said bitterly into the darkness.” If wishes were horses then beggars would ride. I imagine that right about now Severus is wishing he had never forced her into this either. Will they be able to salvage something out of "this?" I certainly hope so. Beth

Author's Response: Oh yes -- by this point he wishes that more than Hermione, if that's possible.

I know I've been a lurker until now... but this chapter gave me a twinge that I just couldn't resist commenting on. I felt so sad for Severus while they were at dinner. He seems so vulnerable... so sweet even. Time is fast running out... and I know he cares for her. I think that his 'entrapment' of her at the beginning is forgivable. He saw her as something that he could never have without his contractual hold over her. That's a psychological flow on Sev's part, but it is so like him to get what he wants by any means necessary. I think that he perhaps regrets it... or will... in some small way. I love the subtle hints all throughout the story... Hermione is feeling things for him too... whether she knows it or not! Wonderful chapter!!

Author's Response: It's a tricky situation because "I don't think I can get you by normal means and thus I'm going to entrap you" isn't any less horrible than "I'm going to entrap you because I like entrapping people." It's just a different sort of horrible. Hermione hasn't lost sight of that even as she appreciates the things about Snape that are worth appreciating.

why she wouldn't want to fall in love with him, I have no idea. I totally would. I added this to my favorites. I was looking for it forever because I couldn't remember what it was called from the first time I read it, but I found it. :D

Author's Response: It's really interesting how opinion is split about whether Snape's actions at the beginning are forgivable or not. Either way, I'm glad you liked the story -- thanks for reading.

Severus seems so sweet. I loved the surprise birthday date. It was great. Oh dear, I'm waxing poetic. Severus must be rubbing off on me....that sounds a bit dirty. Thanks for writing!

Author's Response: Everything's a double entendre once you dip a toe into fanfic ...

First off I love the story! You are a really good writer. Also I think that just to you know mix things up a bit you should have your beta's NOT in alphabetical order just to mix things up a bit...

Author's Response: I recall doing that for at least one chapter, by reader request. But of course this was posted two years ago, so I wouldn't rely on my memory of it.

Absolutely love this! Hadn't re-read it for a while. I always end up with a smile plastered on my face when reading this. Beautifully written and my favourite HG/SS story by far. I must make a point of printing it so I can read it when computerless or in a bad mood as it is bound to make me happy. I was very lucky to have come across this story when I had just discovered fanfiction XxXx...

Author's Response: Thank you -- I'm so glad you think so. It's the darkest of my stories, but I do think in the end it celebrates redemption, love and the importance of the individual.

Oh. ... Um ... Sorry, speechless. Great chapter. That was a nice birthday, though the end was rather shocking. Well, for her; not for the attentive reader. For this one at least it was a heartbreaking end. -- “I really can't stay with you,” she said bitterly into the darkness. -- *sniffles* P.S. That first-year accident was hilarious!

Author's Response: Always harder to shock an attentive reader!

And part of her simply didn't have the heart to leave him hanging from the limb onto which he'd walked, since she knew full well that he'd normally avoid the tree altogether. *loves* (understatement)

Author's Response: I do love metaphors.
