Reviews for The Toil of the Just

There is a lot of truth in what Snape has to say in this story and that makes it so scary. I would love to see even a brief sequel describing the how the world goes on without Voldemort and how Hermione and Snape(?) end up.

This story is so very imaginative and, I want to say, dark? horrible? terrifying? All those things seem a negative criticism, but I promise you, they are not. One never stops to consider that with every war there are people out there who do horrible and evil things to bring an end to the conflict, with a winner who is just and good. To know Snape embraced this, and Hermione recognized the potential in herself, was frightening. Also, I love the ideal you used for Voldemort staying alive all those years. Very smart. Thanks for a great story.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! Yes indeed, sometimes terrifying is a compliment :-)

Hermione can't really win with this can she? Either way the story goes after the epilogue she's going to suffer and be changed in a fundamental way. Great story. Thank you

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing. It all depends what you mean by "win". Do we "win" when our life goes exactly according to plan without ever doing something special? This is a world where they all have lost so much...

Well done. Please grant us a sequel. I think you did a very fine job of portraying this Snape. I'd like to read more, and I don't think I'm alone. Thanks for all your hard work.

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing and letting me know "all the hard work" is not in vain :-), and for the compliments. I must say, once this Snape was in my mind it's very difficult - for me- to see him otherwise. Because all along reading canon I was asking myself what it was that kept VDM so infatuated with Snape, when we never really *see* his utility to the Dark Side... and this story answers it, at least partly. And FWIW I don't believe one without strong family ties anchoring him in the "good", living this life since his teens, could remain unscathed by twenty years of spying and physical torture. Therefore his "thing" with Hermione is a kind of redeeming for him. There are many possible paths this story can go from this, and not all of them are conducive to happy ends. For example, what if she heals him but then he hates her for sullying herself for one such as him? It might happen, it's "realistic", but I don't like it. Or how much effort can she give in helping him see he's really redeemed, and is deserving of the "Dumbledore was right" kind of love? Well. I ahve much writing to do with other assignments, but this is a story that won't let me forget it. Thanks!

Oh, the Epilog came up! And first I was really sad as it did not contain what I had somehow hoped for. I know that sacrifices have to be done and they did already quite a few in that story, but still... he said he would win the war, and well... there is still something going on that he has to finish! Though reading it again... and again... it got closer to what would match my preference. You did a great job to bring this to an end and leaving two ways of reading it. Maybe me not being native speaker permit the option for interpretation, but the last sentence... that he gave her the power to save the beloved ones with something that might be evil, but could save them... well, she has the locket, she has the connection, so I willed her to use that power ;-) Thanks for the story!

Author's Response: Thanks a lot for reviewing, and in a foreign language yet! Yes. He thought he would do all that was needed to win the war, and then he "wasted" himself sacrificing his life for H's sake, which was also a way for me to show that he did fall in love with her, in his stilted, bizarre way. I left her with a very hard decision to make. At the beginning (the first night) he tells her that the only way to win a war against Evil is to use it, but we don't understand because we think he's "dirty". At the end she's going to have to use evil to save him, and thereby she will be a tainted soul, also. Otherwise, she will see herself as a terrible person, because she allowed him to use evil to save *her* and the others, but for him she wouldn't be ready to do the same and sully herself. Thanks a lot for reviewing and for your insights!
