The world you've created is lyrical. It is in some ways more cohesive and sensical than Rowling's.

Author's Response: Oh, thank you very much! :D

Okay. I had to read all of the reviews and take some deep breaths before attempting to say anything about this. You are an outstanding writer and I love how you have a real gift for spinning compelling stories for Snape and Hermione. This ending hit me like a punch in my stomach, and I mean that in the most complimentary way in reference to my previous statement. I don't have to be happy about it. I anticipated a happy ending with the castle providing a mate that it felt they both deserved, given what outside forces dealt them. I thought Hermione would have his child(ren), giving her the health route to pass on the reigns of being the Head, as the castle showed in the book. Anyway, I think it hurts most because I don't feel like Snape actually loved her ever. She saw only what she wanted to from that cursed mirror, and because she truly loved him, she was able to free him. If he truly loved her, he would have at least tried to do the same. No, he had been (understandably) driven nearly as mad as his jailer, but his sense of self preservation and second-nature duplicity remained as it seems the Snape before his freedom knew nothing of what it meant to truly love, regardless of what he did out of guilt about Lily. I feel like he went on to be a celebrated great headmaster because that's what he wanted for himself. He couldn't get away from Harry Potter fast enough and that was all about his guilt for what he'd done to Hermione. He didn't connect with Hermione when he was free because he didn't actually love her; their only connection seems to have been at the beginning of her imprisonment when she was still sane enough to project it. Snape only saw a Hermione that only had love for him left to hold on to after 20 years' imprisonment because that's what he wanted to see. He wants to die because the guilt is eating away at him, and he's convinced himself that when that happens, she will be free too. Does it seem at all likely that Bellatrix would have made that a remote possibility? No. Actually loving Hermione and performing the same magic to free her is all that can be done. He can't let anyone find out about this because then they'd know who he truly is and not the great man he set himself up to be and became. He wants to die because all he can see in his own mirror of erised is someone who loves him so much that he sees she'd rather live eternity in that mirror's hell than make him suffer ever again. Self-preservation. Duplicity. Guilt. And it seems that Cowardice has finally caught up with him. A real terror of a tragedy. But, no one can fault you for this being the way the story goes. Sometimes things turn out that way. Otherwise, there would be no happy endings because there would be no Balance. Bravo! P.S. I am only expressing what this reader took from the story, the message I received. I'm pretty sure I am wrong, at least about parts of it, but I can't wrap my mind around anything different. Thanks for remaining true to yourself. A forced ending is always far worse.

Author's Response: Chantal, thank you for your amazing and thought-provoking review. One of the most delightful things about writing a story is knowing that you've given your reader a reason to really sit back and think about it. I am just blown away at you insights - for they far surpass my own. I really don't write these things - my Muse gives them to me to write, and I try to stay true to his direction. Sometimes I truly don't understand my characters' motives myself. I hoped that Severus loved her, but it's very hard to say. And I agree that his guilt is something he has worn so long that he thinks it's his skin, and therefore he transfers it easily from Lily to Hermione to Hogwarts. I've also had readers who speculated that the castle itself was responsible, and manipulated Hermione to do what it wanted to have Severus back. I think your explanation is completely credible and honest, and I am thrilled that you would take the time to share it with me. In my mind, in many ways, Hermione was as much to blame as Severus. We know she could be very headstrong when she was convinced she was right about something, and get it disastrously wrong (like the Polyjuice Potion in Chamber of Secrets). She was so certain that she had the answer I think she would not have heeded Severus' warnings even if they had been more emphatic. I also want to believe the reason Severus didn't tell anyone about her is the same reason Aberforth didn't tell anyone about Hermione; he was afraid she would be displayed or dissected and experimented on. I truly think he loved her, in as much as a man of questionable sanity could. It broke my heart to leave Hermione trapped in that mirror, as you have guessed. Because I love these characters so much, I do want them to have their HEA, and when they don't, or their character's behave in a way that troubles me, I am troubled. This story still troubles me. I've been ripped to shreds over it in another archive, but here on Ashwinder I am surrounded by readers like yourself, who see it for what it is and what it could be, and I'm so thankful for that. Thank you again for this. I'm never going to forget this review, and I will always be grateful to you for sharing it.
