Ah! How refreshing to see an essay on Ashwinder, and boy did I eat it up. Your analysis of the canon relationship between Hermione and Snape is wonderfully done. While I found the idea of the end of the first book as a "test" for the students, the theory you posit sure seems solid with your idea that Snape would have uttered, "I'll handle Miss Granger." Most wonderfully, you have linked lines that--even in my repeated readings, after I had become an adamant SS/HG shipper around OOTP's release--I had never noticed as connections between them. Nicely done. |

Interesting read of the series from an academic standpoint, truly thought-provoking. There are a few moments that you touched upon that I have seen used in various fics, but you also include and analyze a number of interactions in a new way. This is a very enjoyable look at the canon relationship between Hermione Granger and Severus Snape - one that I could easily believe JKR had intended. |

In contrast to Rowling's personal real life experience with a dark man, the fictional character Severus Snape had to die. More than a revenge, it was necessary for the writer's emotional closure. Rickman's interpretation was magnificently obscure. Did he teach the writer? |

Forgot to mention - I remember reading a comparison between Hermione and Snape in one of those 'clues' books that were published after each successive HP book came out. The comparisons were very brief but they peaked my interest enough that I took note of those two throughout the rest of the series. Again, fabulous essay. |

Brilliant. And a fabulous read. Even if all these connections were simply sub-conscious on JKR's part, they dots certainly connect. Thank you very much for sharing this. |

Amazing. I love how you connected Snape and Hermione, given the limited point of view in the books. |

I know I've read this before, so now I must tell you how wonderful it is. The dynamic of reading vs. being read is so beautifully apt. Best summation I've yet seen of all the unspoken reliance placed upon Hermione in canon.
Author's Response: She is awesome, isn't she? Sometimes people think she is mostly a Mary Sue-like point-of-view character, but she's very much her own person. |
