Reviews for The Tie That Binds

I think in this universe the characters accept that they have extraordinary power and can manipulate things/ people with magic. Almost like using their will/power to get things their way is an irresistible force. What can realistically contend with them. Well, in this story irresistible force has met immovable object and has lost. It is interesting to see how they deal with not being able to manipulate their way to the outcome they want; to be powerless in the situation. Hermione refuses to accept that she is not powerful enough to stop unwanted events from occurring. Minerva thinks to outwit a force far more powerful than she and comes face to face with just how powerless she is. Severus runs himself ragged with worry until he realizes what he is actually up against. His response to being powerless to save Minerva is alcohol and distance (oddly similar to Lucius' response to being powerless over the boredom at home). None of us are as powerful as we think we are. You can scream at the storm if you want to, but sometimes it might be better just to ride it out. Interestingly, only the healers at St. Mungo's seem to realize they have no power in this situation and that there is no hope for Minerva. For having this rather accurate assessment of reality, Hermione labels them "incompetent twits." I think what she doesn't understand is that sometimes no amount of competence will get you what you want.

Author's Response: Thank you for such an insightful review. It is so refreshing to receive reviews that really delve into the meat of a story. You are absolutely correct. So often we see these characters come face to face with some horrible obstacles and every time they overcome them in some way or another. It's different to not only have them fail, but to have them actually face the fact that there is not a single thing they can do to prevent it. Again, thank you for such a fantastic review!

While I don't usually like Ron, I too felt like he was vilified a bit for trying to help. Offering help is not a bad thing, he was out of her life for 2 years, but he was a huge part of it for 13. Also, he felt a little more mature when you first introduced him when they broke up and this just sort of fell back into typical 'emotional range of a teaspoon!Ron'. other than that, i thought you were brilliant and I really enjoyed your Hermione and Severus.

Author's Response: It’s interesting that I have had so many readers consider Ron’s behavior okay. While he may have been a part of her life for a very long time, I considered it an insult that he wouldn’t even take the time to talk to her himself, but suggests she talk to a complete stranger. After two years of no contact—ignoring her letters when she needed him the most—he just decides that he should take it upon himself to get her help? If he truly cared for her, he wouldn’t have let her down in the first place. Anyway, I am so happy you took the time to read and review. I always find it interesting to see what people think of the characters and the story. So, again, thank you for reading and for leaving a review!

I sit here in the depths of the night remembering the death and dying parts of my profession. Friends and acquaintances still phone when suddenly faced with their own mortality. I cannot begin to utter platitudes for there is no time for that, but I try to relate a time when that person touched me with their warmth, their humor and how strong were the bonds they forged with family and friends. The eulogy written by you for Hermione to speak was among the finest I've heard. It's strange to think of a fictionalized character (Ron Weasely) with the temerity to believe that deep mourning is something to be immediately eradicated by a short course with a shrink. That's his answer? Lordy, he doesn't even know the question! An unusual tale, but worthy of ten point rating. Be careful, you're making your readers think. Fine work. JF

Author's Response: Thank you for taking the time to read. I really appreciate it. I agree, it is strange to think of someone who believes the loss of life can be fixed by talking to a shrink. For even suggesting it, that just goes to show that Ron never truly held Hermione in high regard. He has no idea and I am so very happy you were able to catch his act of ignorance. Again, thanks for reading, and thank you for taking the time to review. It means a lot!

As with some reviewers before me, you also made me tear up. That was a lovely speech and I enjoyed the snippet about Snape sealing the speech so Hermione wouldn't be able to worry about it to the point of insanity. I find that small act on his part to be very telling about their developing relationship and the type of truly considerate and attentive man he has the potential to be, given the chance to grow closer to someone. Toward the end there I kind of understand where Ron is coming from and it seems like he's offering an olive branch in his own awkward way, but he just doesn't have the right to suggest such things after cutting Hermione out of his life for so long. Severus advising him to Walk. Away. made me laugh. So happy to see another update, and looking forward to more :)

Author's Response: First, thank you for taking the time to read and review. I really appreciate it! I'm really happy that you were able to pick up on the subtle changes in the way Severus views Hermione. It is those subtle changes that pave the way for a potential relationship. I agree with you concerning Ron. He may have felt he was doing the right thing, but he is really only being inconsiderate. Like you said, what gives him the right to suggest she get professional help when he refused to truly help her when she needed him the most? People who truly care about others simply don't do that.

While it is certainly true that Ron should not have hurt or ignored Hermione in her emotional need for the previous two years, it strikes me that in his own clumsy way he was trying to help her. Besides, how different are his words ""I meant no disrespect , it's just I know how Hermione get's all bent out of shape when things like this happen." from your description of her in Snape's mind? "Hermione was, as Severus liked to describe her, a dark cloud swelling with rain. He was not entirely sure how much more she could handle in her life before she burst wide open."

Author's Response: Ron’s words are different from Severus’s for the simple reason that he doesn’t really care about Hermione. If he did, he wouldn’t have ignored her when she needed him the most. Also, by Ron’s poor choice of words, he makes it seems as though Hermione is overreacting. Severus, on the other hand, seems to truly understand the pain she feels. Like Severus said in the story, people have a way of letting you down when you need them the most. Ron Weasley is no different to that fact. He may have thought he was helping, but I my mind, he was doing the exact opposite. Instead of offering to talk to her himself, he suggests she speak with a complete stranger. Bottom line, he had no right to do that. Thank you for reading and taking the time to review. I’m always interested to see what you think about the characters I write. You certainly don’t disappoint, Jong_Kahn!
