What's wrong with food analogies? Food has a depth and variety to it that just can't be applied to anything else. As such, food-related modifiers are among the highest ranked in the world, according to the FDA. Personally, I believe that the food metaphors ought to be applied to Snape as well. With his limp hair like extra-fine spaghetti cooked in bacon fat, dandruff flakes like a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds to his doughy scalp. His great, big, overcooked chicken nugget of a nose. His eyes lusty and sparkling like a black bean doused in olive oil and set on fire with one of those fancy torches used for creme brulee. He speaks every word deliberately. Carefully. Like he is concentrating on holding a spoonful of soup at the back of his throat. He grows on her like he is E. Coli and she is a room temperature slab of beef. I mean, why stop at potatoes?

Author's Response: Scum, you are as nutty as a cashew, as tart as a lemon and as crazy as a spoon. You're also a good friend, which is as sweet as chocolate and as never spoiling as honey. But please, PLEASE stop stealing my food metaphors - you are ripping off my best stuff!! I don't know if your metaphors are all that wholesome (E. Coli?), but I appreciate the gesture. I do, however, think that "His eyes lusty and sparkling like a black bean doused in olive oil and set on fire with one of those fancy torches used for creme brulee" is actually canon, and you might get in trouble with JKR and her posse. Thank you, sweetie.

Cinnamon eyes I’ve seen often enough, but Russet? That's new. I realize it is mandatory to describe Hermione’s eyes and hair in terms of food and alcoholic beverages, but this is the first time I’ve seen a potato turn up. Good for you. It’s nice to get away from the usual mead and chocolate and honey and whiskey. But what’s wrong with good old brown? It’s a lovely color for both hair and eyes. No need to dress it up for the dinner table.

Author's Response: Thank you for your review. According to Wiktionary, the definition of Russet is a dark brown color with a reddish-orange tinge. You can find the reference here: http://en. wikipedia. org/ wiki/ Russet_(color) (Please remove spaces.). Merriam-Webster defines it thus: a reddish brown colour; Middle English, from Anglo-French, from russet, adjective, russet, from rus, rous red, from Latin russus; akin to Latin ruber red. Here is the reference for that: http:// www. merriam-webster. com/ dictionary/ russet (again, please remove spaces). Here are some examples of its usage in literature: "The wind sighed through the woods, sending leaves spinning down in all shades of gold and orange and russet,..." "Fool Moon", novel by Jim Butcher. "Behind her and her husband were the four Tarleton girls, their red locks indecorous notes in the solemn occasion, their russet eyes still looking like the eyes of vital young animals, spirited and dangerous." "Gone With The Wind", novel by Margaret Mitchell. And from a famous quote from a letter Oliver Cromwell wrote to Sir William Spring in September 1643: "I had rather have a plain, russet-coated captain that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, [than that which you call a gentleman and is nothing else]." The first recorded use of russet as a color name in English was in 1562 and its name derives from russet, a coarse cloth made of wool and dyed with woad and madder to give it a subdued grey or reddish-brown shade. I hope that has cleared things up a little for you.

A part of me wants to call shenanigans on this being your first fanfic, (did I understand your author's note correctly?!) because it seems a bit unbelievable. It was way too good. Nice job showing Severus turning around, and having Hermione so stalwart at his side-- and their kids sound amazing, which they would be, b/c Severus would never allow himself to be anything less than a 150% full-on engaged daddy. XD Thank you for sharing!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! This was indeed my very first fanfic, and I really appreciate your comments! ;) It was based on a drawing by the incomparable Sempraseverus. I had told her I would love to write a fic, but had no new ideas. She posted the drawing and said, "Here - do something with that!" and it was done in two days. I am always thrilled when readers compliement it - I must have sat here for 30 minutes with my hand on the 'Post' button, trying to get up the nerve to upload it! I'm glad I did - it started one of the most rewarding and creative periods of my life.

The lyrics were perfect.

Author's Response: Everytime I have heard that song, I thought of Severus Snape. I knew I'd have to include it here. It just seemed to say everything about him, and how someone like Hermione Granger would feel, watching him drown in his anger and bitterness.

Awwww, squeels like a teenager.....that was so sweet.
