Reviews for Camerado

What an incredible pair of chapters- I am a bit in awe of you. Severus' "inconvenient epiphany" was exceptionally well-handled, and "Why can't you let me stay?"-- Jesus, I felt like crying. Your Dumbledore is truly chilling, and using Severus' reactions to all his manipulations and emotional blackmail to point out the maddening flaws in JKR's reasoning/ plotting feels natural rather than forced. So much of this story happens in all the little glances and misinterpretations and the skillful use of POV (which for the most part has been internally consistent for both Hermione and Severus). I was half hoping that Hermione would ask Harry to let her see the healing, but then, she was so repulsed by Harry's view of Snape in other memories, perhaps it was for the best. I did hope she might tell the others off-- there is a real, disturbing ugliness behind their behavior in the aftermath. However, perversely, Severus' determination to make Harry's year miserable seemed almost petty, rather than a reflection of his rage and feelings of impotence. Oh, and I'm a little uncertain what "Another Gryffindor almost killing another Slytherin" refers to- pretty sure it's meant to be Sirius and himself at the Whomping Willow, but it seemed a little vague, particularly since Severus was the victim in that incident. (?) Ah, well, I suppose we can blame the shields for his detachment. There is something thrillingly physical about your conception of magic which I first noticed in the descriptions of Occlumency; to carry that thread forward and have them both struggle to maintain control of that force in these chapters was revealing. Severus in particular really feels like a man finally, finally losing his tenuous grip on himself- I found his swearing at himself/ at her electrifying and totally authentic. I'll stop before this review expands to a line-by-line analysis of everything that was intense and lovely and well-conceived about these chapters. I am just really, really hoping that Severus might be about to act a little... selfishly. Once again, thank you.

Author's Response: I can't tell you how glad I am to hear you say the plotting re: Dumbledore and Snape feels natural. To be honest, this is partly why these must recent chapters have been taking me so long to write--trying to come up with/figure out a believeable explanation for what sometimes seem to be huge, gaping holes in Dumbledore's plan, without resorting to giving the old man dementia and washing my hands of trying to make sense of it! I agree with you that Harry et al's reactions to Draco's near-death were definitely a little disturbing. And yes, I did mean Snape and Sirius when they were student by the "another Gryffindor/Slytherin" comment--I'm sorry if that wasn't clear. Thank you for such a thoughtful review, I love knowing what you think works, as well as what doesn't.

I read this story in one sitting, and I'm still astounded. It's excellent and woefully under-reviewed. I can't wait for the next chapter!

Author's Response: Thank you for reviewing! I'm glad you liked it--I've started the next chapter already, and am hopeful it won't take too long to write (famous last words. . .)

Oh! What a brutal place to leave this wonderful story! Please, please add more soon. Snape's character is fantastic, and you write one of the most sinister Dumbledores I've ever read - all kept nicely in character, of course. Keep up the wonderful work!

Author's Response: I didn't mean for it to be brutal! I'm glad you like the way Snape is written, and Dumbledore. . . Well, I do see him as being rather sinister. Or perhaps selfish/singleminded--either way, I'm glad you think he's in character. Thank you for reviewing!

So very happy to see this chapter come up. It has been a long time. Great as always, and looking forward to more. Where are we in this tale? Halfway? Close to the end? I'm hoping it's more the former than the latter.

Author's Response: We're definitely around the halfway mark--nowhere near the end! Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Had not read this story until today. Nothing short of AMAZING. Your writing, the characterizations, your dedication to interweaving their story with the larger plot. Rarely do I make it through anything that doesn't have a healthy dose of porn, but this one has me on the edge of my seat! A thousand times thanks, and keep up the wonderful work.

Author's Response: I'm so glad you like it (in spite of the lack of porn ;-) Thanks for letting me know!
