Reviews for The Spirit That Remembers

i could see Harry thinking that before DH - but after? I never understood why in canon he named his son after the guy who left him on his aunt's doorstep, knowing he would be mistreated for his entire childhood and believing (until the end of year 4) that childhood would be all the life he'd ever experience.

Enjoying the red herring you're serving! Thanks for writing and sharing this; I like the character study. Also the p2q wink, for those of us who have been around the ship for awhile.

I don’t know if you still read these, but I just want to say how happy I am to have found this story again. I do not understand how HP fans would turn their noses up at SS/HG. Thank you for writing this. Now to enjoy again...

Snape wasn't sentimental? Did she know him at all?

Author's Response: Apparently not as well as she thought she did!

I'm glad that she's asking searching questions, but I think she should have asked more about the pre-Hogwarts pre-DE ones. Harry's summaries are somewhat inadequate.

Author's Response: She really should have gotten Minerva drunk again and made her talk some more, but I don't know how much more she would have been able to fill in, honestly. And Harry still sees what Harry thinks he sees.

Are you sure you have the memories in the right order. ?I can't check right now, but surely Snape saving Dumbledore's life comes *before* Dumbledore ordering him to kill him when the time comes? I agree with Hermione and reviewers like Guinnevere. Dumbledore groomed Harry to be a child-hari-kiri. He moved people around like pawns, recklessly throwing lives away for little gain (Polyjuice chase, anyone?) and though JK hasn't given us a clear alternate path that would have worked, I don't believe that that vindicates him. It worked that way because his previous inactions had closed off other options, not (to my mind) because none ever existed.

Author's Response: Yep. That's the order they were in, alright. And I agree with you about Dumbledore. Some very bad things could have been avoided if he had acted sooner, though I do think he had to make sure he had all the facts before he tackled some of the bigger tasks, and I give him credit for spending a lot of time collecting his own information. Once he had it, though, he made some fairly cold-blooded choices with people's lives. As I said, I'm not a fan.

I can't agree that the purpose of including the post-Shack incident was to show that Lily hadn't always loved James. That was eminently obvious from the post-OWLs memory, and Snape knew Harry had already seen that one. Perhaps he was trying to defend the abrupt way she dumped him, by showing how her friendship had already been teetering, but I believe it's more likely that he was reiterating what he'd told Harry about the so-called "Prank" in PoA, ie that the Marauders were all in on it, and that James had ulterior motives for the supposed rescue. Why is that important? Because his schooldays relationship with the Marauders and Lily defined his life and this was a turning-point in that trajectory.

Author's Response: Keep in mind that all of this is speculation on different people's parts. This is what Harry has been trying to figure out since he first saw the memories, and now what Hermione is trying to add to her knowledge of the man. It isn't necessarily the "truth" (whatever that may be). It's each of them trying to get inside Snape's head (literally!). I think your ideas about it are very perceptive, and maybe more on point than either of theirs. Personally, I find the entire subject of those memories fascinating. It's what inspired this entire piece, as you will see! So glad to hear your thoughts.
