I think your story is incredible, and the realist in me relishes the stark cruelty of Hermione's surroundings. Amazing writing, horrifying yet brilliant interpretation of war.

hermione wondered "whether or nor she should spit in" Lucius' tea. I heard of a slave cook in the Old South who did spit in every single dish she prepared for her 'masters'. Looking back, she reckoned that they must have swallowed about a gallon of her saliva :-D Even if they are being monitored, kitchen staff should be able to get food: cutting the crusts off bread, scraping pots, eating the leftovers from the serving trays and dirty plates - when you are starving, you lose your squeamihsness about such things.

29-11-2006 18:31 So that's why Lucius is showing up places where he normally wouldn't be at - he "just" wants someone worth killing! Nice job on Percy. However, if he has myopia, he can't see things that are distant, but can see things that are up close. If he has hyperopia, he can't see things that are up close, but can see things that are distant. Anyway, the guy's as blind as a bat, and will probably end up in trouble for his pains. (Wonder if there's a temporary spell to correct vision, as there doesn't seem to be a permanent one...)

I just found this story, and I'm really drawn in...you write beautifully, in addition to the great premise. There are so many authors who can come up with brilliant plots and lots of drama, but don't have the technical ability to pull off a convincing story, and there are those like me, who can write and characterize well enough, but couldn't plot our way out of the proverbial paper bag. You seem to be one of those lucky few who can do both-go you! I'm not entirely sure about how in character everyone is-- though killing off half the cast before the story begins is one of the best ways around that-- but they've barely gotten to interact, thus far, so I'll reserve my judgement til I've read the later chapters. (Which is not really any big chore.) One thing-- poor Lithuania! What did they do to deserve Draco? (My boyfriend is Lithuanian, so I'm feeling protective.)

Author's Response: Lithuania is small. Draco was not worthy to have Austria. That's all. Heh.

I just wanted to pause in my reading here to say that I think this is a superb story. I'm so glad that I have found it. I have been considering writing a post-apocalyptic, Voldemort-rule story myself and I'm very excited to see what you're doing with it. What are your influences? WWII? French Algeria? Vietnam?

Author's Response: Definitely WWII, but not just Europe. Of course, I was thinking of the Jewish Ghettos of Germany, but also the Japanese internment camps here in Canada during the war period. I was also inspired by the politics of WWII.

Author's Response: Yay! I'm really glad you like it and that your friend liked it enough to recommend it.
