This is the first time in a long while that I feel the urge to leave a detailed review. I'm really glad that this story was recommended to me. It was, above all, very well written, though I admit I wanted to smack Severus on the head for citing poetry all the time, too. Apart from that, I went back and forth between feeling for Hermione and not liking her very much. I sure understood where she was coming from, but I felt she was standing very much in the way of her own happiness by harping on about principles. It has largely to do with the fact that I'm not like the Hermione you painted and thus has troubles putting myself in her shoes. But especially after reading the last chapter, I was able to understand that she really suffered from feeling powerless. And I could always see how the trust Severus' unknowingly shattered would always remain an issue in their relationship. Funnily enough, I could more easily understand his motives and his way of thinking, though I have no Slytherin tendencies whatsoever. But I guess your interpretation of Severus is very close to my own, so every thought he had felt familiar. A very thought out, highly psychological story that had me enthralled for two days (in which I read a lot). I might keep thinking about it even longer, and that just goes to show how exceptional this fic is. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm looking forward to exploring your other work!

This was well worth the time! Such an emotional ride. Thank you for writing it and even more so in finishing it. There are so many lengthy stories that go undone and it breaks my heart to become invested to have it end so abrupt. **Raises glass** To your health and may you never tire of writing.

Author's Response: I know, it's hard to never get the ending! That's why I didn't start posting chapters until I was done.

I read it in one go, couldn't really bring myself to go to sleep, I was so interested in the ending. It was no simple obstacle that could be overcome easily enough and I was dying to know if you could make them work in the end, for I wanted them to be together, knowing, just like Hermione did, that it wasn't healthy and feeling a little guilty for actually wanting it. To be honest I didn't actually believe it was possible, but I think you somehow managed it. It doesn't feel wrong. And although he changed so dramatically, it should feel like he turned into someone else completely, it doesn't, it's still him and I am in awe of you and your talent. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be so consistent not having written anything myself but it seems to be something fanfic writers often struggle with. Thank you so much for writing this, for sharing your thoughts, they made me think too. I loved the way you included extracts from Faust and was it Much ado about nothing? And the way you write, it is so.. effortless, I mean words flew so naturally I enjoyed it immensely. It was simply beautiful, thank you.

Author's Response: I'm so glad you found it worthwhile -- it's an unsettling story in many ways, and while I was interested in exploring the themes of power, change and forgiveness, I didn't want to end up with a story that condoned abuse. God knows we need less abuse in this world. Thank you for reading!

I returned to this story after my first read a long time ago simply because I remember I loved the way you write - style and plot. But it was so much more meaningful to me the second time around, considering I've done a decent bit of growing up in the middle. I can truly appreciate, now, the moral morass the characters were steeped in, and I think what makes the story exceptional is how you outline that morality can rarely, if ever, be completely objective. Even though we do have standards of morality in society, when applied to individuals, they become fluid and pliable - and what we may consider unforgivable at some point truly and honestly does become something we can accept and live with because doing so brings so much more happiness. I'm very glad indeed that you didn't terminate the story with Hermione getting her upper hand and leaving. This turn of the situation is certainly more real and relatable. We DO get past things we never thought we could, we DO rationalise things we might abhor if we had been more objective and we certainly do love Goethe. Brilliant piece of work.

Author's Response: I'm so glad it improved on the second reading -- I love that. Changing my mind as I wrote the draft meant that I had to think hard about whether it was possible, and if so, under what circumstances. Whether it was a good decision for Hermione to forgive him and create an actual relationship is something every reader has to decide for herself.
