Hermione Granger Biography

Name: Hermione Jane Granger (Jane from interview with JKR)

Nickname: Mudblood (only if you want to insult her); "cleverest witch of her age" (PoA), Herm-own-ninny (Krum)

Appearance: Bushy, brown hair; large front teeth (until GoF where her teeth were enlarged by Malfoy and then shrunk to smaller than their original size by Madam Pomfrey)

Age/DOB: September 19, 1980

Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Granger, both Muggle dentists; very proud of their daughter's accomplishments

Siblings: none have been mentioned, but JKR stated in an interview that she always meant for Hermione to have a little sister

Upbringing: Hermione was brought up as a Muggle, only learning she was a witch at age eleven when she received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. We don't know too much about her parents or her life prior to Hogwarts, though one must assume that she was a very dedicated student and her parents placed a high value on education (both by her own actions in all the books and by her parents' profession of dentistry, which adds several more years of school past an undergraduate degree)

Education: Attended a Muggle primary school until age eleven when she was accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Friends: Ron Weasley and Harry Potter; The majority of Hermione's friends are within her own House. Although she is closest to Ron and Harry, she is friends with Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil (the other female Gryffindors her year, though there are two we haven't met yet -- see http://www.hp-lexicon.org/hogwarts_students.html#Gryffindor%20girls for more info), Seamus Finnigan, Dean Thomas and Neville Longbottom. Through her association with Ron, she is also friendly with the Weasley family, especially the youngest Ginny. Since she attended school with Percy, Fred, George and Ginny, one would assume she knows them better than Bill or Charlie.

Romantic Relationships: She was escorted to the Yule Ball during GoF by Viktor Krum (Bulgarian Seeker) and they appeared to have a friendship for the rest of the book.

House: Gryffindor

House Status: Prefect (OotP)

Hobbies: Studying, reading (especially 'Hogwarts, A History'), taking as many classes as she can fit in her schedule (used a Time Turner in PoA to take extra classes), adventuring with Harry and Ron, working for "social causes" such as attempting to free the House Elves from their enslavement (GoF, OotP) and researching defenses for falsely-accused hippogriffs (PoA), often tutors other students in her year

Dislikes: rule breaking, Divination (believes it to be foolishness since it is more an inborn trait than one to be studied for), Malfoy (most especially when he's calling her a Mudblood), Voldemort, Snape (most especially when he's calling her a know it all)

Personality Quirks: Hermione has a tendency toward bossiness and is a stickler for following rules, unless she can see breaking a rule is for the greater good. She is very organized and very intent on earning good grades, especially on exams and her OWLs and NEWTs. She enjoys school to such an extent that she often completes homework well before it is due and was more than slightly disappointed when end-of-the-year exams were cancelled in CoS.
